The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

And, actually, as far as I am aware, statistically the countries where owning a gun is legal have far higher percentages of deaths caused by guns than places where they are illegal. Whether that is a direct result of availability, or more to do with certain places having an ingrained gun...

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

I don't have any opinion on whether guns should be illegal or not or what is a person's right to own a gun blah blah blah. I just wish they never existed. As far as I am concerned, the fact that they do exist means that it's always going to be a aspect of society that gets people all up in...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

ooohhh yeah, I am a massive hippie who doesn't believe in discipline, mannnnnnnn! You like animals, you care about the welfare of pets. Let me ask you: would you smack a puppy or a kitten while they were being toilet-trained and made a mistake? Most people, I am sure, would not...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

Children are extraordinarily responsive to facial expressions. You can communicate a hell of a lot through your face even if they cannot fully comprehend language. I would hazard a guess that 99% of the time a smack is administered with an expression of anger. The majority of what a child...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

Did I say that I found that to be a useful form of punishment, either?

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

Given that it is the default position to not reason with young children, shouldn't the idea that perhaps they can be taught important lessons through methods other than smacking be, at the very least, tested? It makes me quite cross to see people in their teens and early 20's who have not ever...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

And humans have far more sophisticated methods of communication than most animals, so one would hope we'd be able to move past primitive punishment techniques.

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

I don't dispute that the parents' intentions come from a place of love and caring; however, physical punishment will inevitably cause feelings of shame in a child. They might not mean to, but they are most certainly using shaming tactics to make their child behave.

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

Children are not as stupid as you think. They do have the capacity to feel empathy and compassion. Why wouldn't they, if they have the capacity to feel shame, fear and sadness (which are ultimately the emotions that smacking is tapping into to make them "behave")?

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

Also, would anyone like to please address my point re: the cane having been an accepted form of discipline historically, but it being widely accepted now that it is a punishment more harmful than helpful? Isn't it a sign of a civilised society to become less and less dependent on physical...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

No, my father's personality type really is beside the point. My mother smacked me and was what would be considered an average, not abusive, parent. She also was the primary caregiver and raised us almost alone.

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

I don't think people realise how impressionable children are. One's formative years really do have a huge impact on the way one will see the world. It is not a good enough excuse, in my view, to point out that smacking is the norm and most adults today would've been smacked as children and they...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

This is my experience with being punished physically and the mental affects of this form of discipline: I have always known the consequence of "bad behaviour" to be physical pain. Both my parents used smacking often (my father was actually sadistically abusive, but that's beside the point)...

    Sexism against guys...

Oh, I think the government should be responsible for paid maternity/paternity leave, in the same way that they compensate people who have time off work for jury service. Perhaps it could be a lump sum that is the equivalent of X amount of time working full time at the average Australian wage?

    Sexism against guys...

That audience was pretty much made up of middle-ages women and wankers who are probably Sydney Uni Arts students that take Gender Studies and Anthropology. We were sitting near a trio of them. They were wanking on about nothing, doing the faux-thoughtful thing.

    Sexism against guys...

Paid maternity leave is a wonderful thing, however I would love to see paid paternity leave considered on an equal footing. In my view, it should be something more like paid parental leave, in which one of the parents can have paid time off work to look after an infant. It would be lovely if...

    Sexism against guys...

A woman who changes her opinion! Dear God! Strumpet! Harlot! Whore! SLUT! Don't you think it's actually a rather positive thing that she is adapting and changing her views as she gets older and the world changes? It shows that she remains a very forward-thinking individual on a variety of...
