    retreat- Heaney

i think im actually starting to get it... i think my thesis is going to be something about how RFTG is actually about finding a sense of place in a world that doesnt allow for grass-roots values....

    retreat- Heaney

yeah, like in digging.. its kind of like a manifesto... it comes at the very beginning of the 'Selected Poems', so its kind of like a statement of his intent... he's going to use poetry to uncover his past, and to help provide for his country, like his father and gradfather did in a more...

Should i do Hamlet for RT?

don't use hamlet. The markers think you're an idiot. never use a text which is a prescribed text for another topic.... NOT a good idea.

    rftg - the shipping news

hmm, i dont think the shipping news has the global good/local bad thing... it challenges the simple sea-change look at retreat, because when we dig into the local, we find inherent flaws in it... the local in this book is by no means perfect, it is quite absurdly flawed actually, much like it is...

    retreat- Heaney

i think perhaps, he is talking about wanting to be different from the norm, wanting to have the power to do something against the grain. Like speak out for this girl, yet he can't cos he's too firmly embedded and at one with the crowd... even though he doesnt agree with the side representing...

    Retreat From The Global

technically, in a perfect world, you should be able to synthesise both... HOWEVER, i do realise the impossibility of this... i would focus on your ideas, but keep them close knit with the text rather than rambling on about the big-picture of global vs. local... hopefully, some of your ideas...

    Retreat From The Global

well, i'd say that the shipping new is pretty traditional in its sructure... linear narrative, chapters... maybe you could talk about that as stepping away from the whole post-modern buzz of globalisation? and similarly, the castle is shot and edited very simply, and intentionally messily...

    retreat- Heaney

digging, blackberry picking, personal helicon, requiem for the croppies, the tollund man, funeral rites and punishment. i just find it all quite strange because RTFG is supposed to revolve around the time-frame of the eighties onward, well the idea of globalisation really had an impact...

    RTFG related matrial?

actually, my english teahcer is like some head-honcho type person, and she said that the texts have to be from the last 30 years. Technically, globalisation and the theory behind it have only existed in the last 30 years and therefore, you cannot retreat from something that doesn't exist yet.
