    2006 Roll call!

I did EES "back in the day" (Class of '04), god that makes me sound old. Although EES had nothing to do whatsoever with what I wanted to do at uni, it was a fun subject nonetheless (and it scales well!!!).

    Unicentre Membership

Haha so you were one of those first years in that massive line to the Unishop booth yesterday. I walked past it on my way to an anatomy exam.

    Parking changes

The road just east of the gardens has a 2 hour limit, but the road just east of that does not. Never park for longer than what the sign says, it's pretty common to walk past a row of cars all with parking fines under the wiper blade.

    Laptops in lectures?

If you do use it lectures, don't watch episodes of The Simpsons AND sit at the front (e.g. guy in my maths lectures). Oh and if you want to use a laptop in lectures, use it; don't let the actions of the majority dictate what you do.

Atleast this VSU thing is finally all over now, no longer do we have to hear the union whinge, bitch and complain about an inevitable change of legislation (Howard does what Howard wants, get used it it; i don't like it either).

    Maths test on first day

I should also add that there is a follow-up Basic Skills Test sometime around Week 5 to see how the class has improved. Once again, they do not make up any assessment component. (Oh and go the Shire...)

    Maths test on first day

Don't worry about it, that's just the Basic Skills Test. When I did it, it was pretty easy. If anything, it gauges the Mathematical knowledge of the class as a whole. Both MATH187 and MATH141 have to do the test in the first lecture. Straight from the Subject Handbook:

magnetic fields, and how to identify which point is the closest

If you are given an image that has the field line actually drawn (not this one of course). Then the strongest magnetic field lies in the area with the highest density of magnetic field lines.

    Discovery Day [08/02/06]

The Discovery Days are a great way to get a taste of what university life is like and the fairly different style of teaching. Don't worry, the nanotech lecture will just be an introduction to the degree and what it entails. It shouldn't be anything too boring/complicated.

DEATH WISH NICK - what's the max. subjects UOW lets its 1st yrs do?

As others have said, uni requires a considerably larger amount of effort than school work ever did. It's better to take it at a moderate pace and get D's and HD's than it is to cram it all in and only score P's and C's. One problem with uni (or atleast with Physics/Engineering subjects) is that...

I was going to say fun, but then I saw it was a maths degree :p

    Parking changes

That's pretty crap. Ah well, I'll just continue to park near the Botanics. There is plenty of parking south of the uni if you're prepared to go for a bit of a walk.

    Academic Transcript; Wihdrawn Subjects

Hmm, I was wondering myself if it was possible to remove those withdrawn subjects (enrolled in the wrong maths subjects for less than a day prior to the 2005 autumn session). When you go to Print Enrolment Record on SOLS, the withdrawn subjects do appear. Ninja, do they appear on that page...

    UOW Roll Call

Hey, welcome to the 'gong! I'll be back as a second year returning for more "fun". Oh... and my degree, which has to have one of the longest names for a single degree. To quote from the Course Handbook: "Bachelor of Medical & Radiation Physics Advanced (Honours)"

    Angular Resolution Question

Haha, well it's good practice for the basic principles of diffraction for the photonics or modern physics section of the first year of a physics degree. :p

    what the definition of momentum

Mass is the numerical measure of intertia. In classical mechanics, it can be seen as the concept you mentioned. Your description of impulse is very vague. But as you correctly stated, it is the change in momentum with respect to time. To derive impulse from Newton's second law, we have...

    what the definition of momentum

But there is a resistance to that force, inertia is all about an object resisting an external force (basically put as "things like to keep doing what they are doing"); that is why when you accelerate in a car at a fast rate, you will be pushed back into the seat. This is also why the mirror in a...

    what the definition of momentum

What I don't think was mentioned is that momentum is a vector. It is the product of a scalar (mass) and a vector (velocity). Therefore it is not necessarily the resistance that may be observed that a body exhibits against an external force; but rather, resistance to forces in the opposite...

    DC Electric Motor Diagram

http://medusa.sdsu.edu/Robotics/Supplements/Motor_Inside.jpg Just ignore everything in the gearing section below the motor shaft. The stator is the stationary part of a motor (the magnets in this case) and the rotor is (self-explanatory) the rotating section (coil).

    civil engineering opportunity program

I entered UoW as an Engineering Opportunity student as my UAI just fell short of that required to enter my first preference of Photonics. Don't stress too much over the interview, you'll meet with Assoc. Prof. Porter (Sub-dean of Engineering) and he'll look through your HSC results and talk it...
