How are the people in commerce esp finance?

That being said there are many aspects/avenues of finance, and more broadly, commerce. The stereotype/cliche/persona which people see glorified in movies/TV is really a small subset of the wider population. There are plenty of roles which will lead you down a great career path in finance which...

Maximising Your Employability Workshop (Saturday 11th March)

I'd also add that if you're in first year uni, the key thing is you can think about what you need to do over the years ahead, and work out where your strengths are vs where you need to brush up. It may not all be immediately be obvious yet, but planning ahead can help significantly especially...

    Post your gaming setup

Decided to buy an Alienware 15 today... could only find the R3 with a GTX 1060 in stock at JB HIFI since the 1070s and higher need to be ordered online. I figured I plan to buy the Graphics Amplifier (external GPU) in the not too distant future so it's less of a concern.

Ranks these uni's for Commerce and Economics.

I don't disagree with this but I would also think that some companies/firms have stronger ties with certain universities due to the societies too... these shouldn't be underestimated.

    Cadetships 2017

Historically they were targeted at people in year 12. I used to always look at the Institute of Chartered Accountants website for their events/etc, as well as on the careers websites for the Big4 firms to stay on top of it. Used to be mid-year (circa june/july) but doesn't hurt to try and keep...

    Cadetships 2017

A new 2017 thread to cover cadetships/traineeships/etc. for accounting/finance/etc roles. It's not clear which firms will be offering positions and in which areas just yet (at time of me posting this) but I'm sure it'll become known over time. Previous threads...

Is Australia's Current Account in surplus currently?

I love how George just uses his real name as his username since state rankings and year kindof give away his identity anyway!

Does increased AU interest rate result a depreciation in AUD?

Higher interest rates also curb spending since either a) offers more incentive to save; or b) higher loan repayments (reducing free cash flow). Both of these reduce inflation though.

How do you write an essay for Business Studies?

Dot points are the great. It's the perfect justification for incomplete sentences.

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Fair enough. The leveraging your networks point is also valid too - but don't use it if you can't guarantee it'll work in your favour. e.g. name dropping someone who has NFI who you are - unless they know you well (and have a positive impression of you), or have prompted their memory recently...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

I mean there is an element of truth to it but depending on the firm/culture/etc, there might be differing views on how serious or committed they want you to be in your interview.

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Challenging roles to take on! Good luck... I've had a few interns these past few weeks in assurance (although I don't do much audit work nowadays). Hope they had a good experience.

    Elective subjects in Accounting

Definitely a good area. The other common pairings would probably be finance and business law/commercial law. Finance for the general content and forcing you to learn a few concepts which might come in handy. Business law because it forces you to think in a certain way and write reports which...

My new dilemma when picking a car.

Sounds practical at least? I can't wait until I can afford to have a two car garage... one practical, one fun. Until then, practical takes priority but I have to admit it's been hella useful having a decent sized car (not even an SUV) for moving stuff and IKEA furniture.

    Nintendo Switch

If you don't know what it is, here's the original trailer from last October: And here's a newer video from the recent presentation. To me, it's a shade under AU$500 and I'm not too sure I want to invest in another Nintendo platform given the Wii U wasn't a great investment despite it...

Doing law if you're not sure about it?

Whilst Comm/Law is a great path, doing law but getting sub par marks won't impress anyone. At the end of the day, do you have any interest in the field? Whether you did it for HSC is not necessarily the criteria - but the amount of effort it'll take to even pass your law subjects will be...

    Eco vs Accounting?

In my limited experience (i.e. doing the cores and having a perusal of the second year subject content), economics at university level is very quantitative compared to high school. That is, there's alot of formulas/numbers/etc.

    Eco vs Accounting?

I feel pure Economics is much more specialised/niche nowadays and isn't as universally appreciated across industries. That being said, in some specific roles within banking, econonics/finance would do very well and be much more highly regarded than the common combination of accounting/finance...
