2014/15 Australian Summer of Cricket Thread :D

The waiting a few more balls to declare was probably partially a little trick to mess with the openers mental preparation.

2014/15 Australian Summer of Cricket Thread :D

Obviously, which is why I am saying that he should have stepped on it earlier in the teams interest.

Marsh needs to hit out or get out, we have enough runs to declare IMO.

So what are you guys playing at the moment?

Big fan of this! My dad was a pilot so I grew up playing flight sim games. I have FSX on this computer but I am pretty rusty, might play a bit later today.

Do ya have a proper study area?

Yeah its the words that are the worst. You don't want to engage that part of your brain with peripheral stuff. That's why most good study music is without lyrics. (or is with lyrics you know back to front.)

Do ya have a proper study area?

Chatter/random noise really annoys me, but I had a solid set of headphones so I just listen to music in those situations. Really chill music or ambient music or an artist you are really familiar with work best for me. My brain treats it as background noise, but far less annoying background...

Do ya have a proper study area?

Different for me as I am a postgrad but I have: 1. A massive and really well set up desk in my room. 2. An office in the dept building, but it's not so spacious and the computer is shit. Pros include there being a whiteboard, couch, free coffee, and academics around that I can talk to about...

What's the BEST 4 unit maths book?

Haven't read the unpublished one of Pender but am quite confident it would be superior to any of the others I have seen, judging by the quality of his 3U book and my knowledge of the man. I used Cambridge and did fine, the book shouldn't be an excuse for holding you back as long as you are...

What's the BEST 4 unit maths book?

I buy my textbooks (And other books) from abebook.com, but you probably won't find much high school stuff there. Some books are still pretty expensive but lots are a ton cheaper.

    Continued fraction for e

It's a little cumbersome to type out, (typesetting continued fractions is gruelling), but the basic idea can be summarised. 1. Chuck in x=-1 to the convergent Maclaurin series for e^x, this gives you an alternating series expression for e^(-1). 2. Find a finite continued fraction...

Misconceptions of numbers in everyday life

I think you are missing the point of this example... The information given is that the river's average depth is 0.5m, the erroneous conclusion is that a person can cross this river. What is wrong with this deduction?

    Super Smash Bros

^ nice :). For me: My favourite game is melee, I think the balance between offense/defense, grounded play/aerial play, edgeguarding/recovering etc is pretty much spot-on. It makes for a really fast paced exciting game with quite a bit of depth. The movement in that game is super crisp too...

    Super Smash Bros

Lets keep this thread alive. What are everyone's favourite games in the series? What characters do you like to play in that game? What kind of style do you play in / what are some tricks you like to use? What characters do you love/hate to fight? etc etc.

So what are you guys playing at the moment?

ssbm Favourite game of all time, by far the game I spend most time playing and trying to improve in. Kerbal space program (with interstellar mod) Very fun as a mathematician, have only just started so am still a bit of a noob at it. Medieval 2 total war (stainless steel mod) My british empire...

    Double Induction?

Sure, it seems this should be valid. (If we have P1 and P2 then we have both statements for all positive integers.) If we write S(n)=S_1(n)\land S_2(n), then this is pretty much the standard induction axiom applied to S. We have P_i\land S(n)\Rightarrow S_i(n+1), so P_1\land P_2 \land...

    Double Induction?

I should be able to answer this, but the way you have written this is slightly ambiguous/confusing...especially on the quantifier front. Can you rephrase it a little more formally please? Eg S_1(n) is the statement that statement 1 is true about the number n. The symbols...

2014/15 Australian Summer of Cricket Thread :D

It isn't that unexpected a result, it has always been hard to bat through an entire adelaide day 5 vs any team with a decent+ spinner.
