I don't know if this is common across NSW but in SDD it seems like our teacher teaches us nothing and expects us to know things because "it's in the textbook". The textbook shows the basics but not how to implement into our projects in VBASIC.NET and etc etc. Is this the same for everyone...

The theory i suppose would be that you can measure it that way (as stated above). Maybe you mean that, the mass on the end of the pendulum's string has no effect on time taken for the oscillations. The only thing that can and will affect it is the length of string to which the mass is tied too...
