    Buses during peakhour

Uhh first years and 9am starts. If you are one of them, please do not make the same assumption previous ones have of having to be at uni by 9, even if you don't have a class. There are other buses such as the 391/393/395 M(something) that go past uni. I usually take those instead during the...

    Club Membership 2014 and OrgSync

When you joined Arc this year, you should have gotten signed up to Org(y)Sync. This is the system that they will use to manage memberships of clubs this year. That means (for most clubs and societies), to formally 'join' in the eyes of Arc, you are supposed to join the society's group on...

    problems with Uni

They are phasing this out and we probably won't have this at all by sem 2  If you have an idea of what you want to do, the try following that course plan as best you could as opposed to the one you are enrolled in. You will be allowed to transfer at the end of the year if you meet the...

Any here doing MATH1081 (Discrete mathematics)?

1081 is maths that you probably would not have seen in high school. 1131 is revision/continuation. So some people find 1081 harder since it is new. If you can get your head around some of the concepts early on ten it may not be too bad.

    need help with time table

Go to CLB on Monday and they'll explain stuff to you. Basically, Thursday is an impromptu design crap. Complete waste of time. You will be split into different locations around the uni based on your last name. Hence no specific room has been booked and would not appear on your timetable. As I...

    Nearby hilly areas around UNSW

Library stairs to the top level :D But yeah, try centenial park. A really beautiful place. Another great location is Coogee, which is just beyond upper campus. It is downhill to the beach but going back up to uni is a fair walk.

Will not be getting UNSW student ID card in 5 weeks...

get some form of photo ID if possible. If there are people in labs, just knock and they will open it for you. During the day it is mostly open anyway. Some computer labs have restricted access.

I know this sounds stupid, but what equipment do you need for uni?

You'll be surprised at how comprehensive some lecture notes and supplementary materials are! Also, text books tend to be more theoretical. Which means it may not necessarily help you a lot for practical/workshop type courses. That said, if you have a strong interest in a subject the textbooks...

Free buses from central station (at the eddy ave bus stop) to UNSW?

I think the the 895/891 to and from eddy avenue is free during major events like open day and o week. At least that is what it states on the o week website.

I know this sounds stupid, but what equipment do you need for uni?

Basically, pen and paper to take quick notes for whatever the lecturer/tutor says/writes. Either a pad of paper, or one torn out of a book will suffice. That way you won't have to bring/carry around too much. For lectures, especially maths, you may want to bring the lecture notes (posted online...

UNSW O Week 2014 chat thread

Just join the tour, grab a bag of goodies and slowly part from the group, going to "the toilet". The tour takes a while and you have to do cheesy things like games and "introduce yourself". Then you could just rejoin at the end for a free BBQ. For the Faculty welcomes, same sort of thing. Go...

    Timetable to calendar

Here's another one that we have been working on that is very simple to use. https://www.csesoc.unsw.edu.au/timetable-importer

do you get to choose your own timetable?

You get given a timetable, but in the end you get to choose which lecture to go to (so it is really your choice). As others mentioned, tutorials may be a bit harder to move around. If tutorials attendance are not marked, then go to any (I usually just go to one my friends are in). Just remember...

Would a minor in Finance or Information Systems be useful for Computer Science?

If you want a job in the finance/business industry then do a minor in Finance. CS is in general a lot more technical than info sys, so unless you want an IT job there isn't much point. Ultimately, the minor is optional. Look at specialisations in CS and see if any of them interest you. That...

    Quick question

yeah any public transport bus (even the ones without the dip thingy). Even the blacktown buses accept them (the white busways ones).

    ARC @ unsw

Yes it is free since they now charge you the SSAF (http://www.innovation.gov.au/highereducation/StudentSupport/Pages/StudentServicesAndAmenities.aspx) - which is separate from your uni course fees. Part of that money is passed on to ARC which is where they get one of their main sources of...

    Timetable question

Depends on the subject but yeah, there's not a lot of difference. There are times when your lecture is more than a week ahead than your tutorial (eg: lecture on Tuesday, tutorial on thursday. So you do the current week lecture and then have a tutorial based on last week's lecture). If there...

Going away for the week in April??

Depends on the course you are doing. During mid sem break - go for it (no impact on your studies). If there are mid sem exams - then probably not such a good idea. You may be able to talk to your lecturer and sit it at an alternate time, but it depends on the circumstances. Assignments - OK as...

    UNSW ID cards (2014 students)

A heads up - they may not accept your student card as a formal ID so just get your passport if you do not have a drivers license. Some buildings/rooms/labs have swipe access, even during the day so you may end up needing it when uni starts (probably around mid sem for after hours work in a...

Class clash, should I drop the core course, then reenrol?

Contact the lecturer, and if they say the clash is OK (Quite likely since it is minimal) then contact your school office if you have any trouble enrolling (ie: if you cannot do it yourself online). They will override it for you.
