I expect I'll do either 14 or 13. Either Maths or IPT isn't going to count.....

a friend of mine did this, she thought she'd do well in chem so she bludged in her backup, but she ended up failing chem and having to drop it. now she's relying on a subject she's done no work in, all because the 12 unit safety net gave her a false sense of security...
you're friend is doing what most of the HSC year does

doing 10/11 units forces you to do well at what you do

it adheres to the economic theory of "specialisation" - that it is better to focus energy into a narrower output then waste it on a wide and random .. thing. brain failure

For my Preliminary year I'm doing 16 units and coping well. So I assume I'll keep 12 for year 12.

I'm only in Year 10 but this question has been pondering in my head for a while. I asked a teacher and she said that it was best to chhoose 12 because you have a greater control of how well you do in your HSC. Remember that only 10 units count towards your HSC so if you screw one up and your doing 10 units, then that's bad. If you do 12 on the other hand, you can still keep improving the other ones. Choosing 12 units can also keep you motivated to do work. Some subjects may also relate to each other in a way e.g. Biology and GEography, so you can draw some knowledge in from other sources. I'm only in Year 10, I dont know if this is true but some people have done 10 units and got really high UAIS. if you give it your best shot in all these subjects, you wont go wrong.

Good luck

im doing 13 units
ummm if you think it will benefit you in the longrun go for it
thing is, in the event that you maybe slip up in one subject really bad which you never saw, you would be better off having an extra subject to fall upon
if you really think that you can do better with 10 units then i say follow your instincts and maintain consistency through your subjects and dont stuff up :)
