Hey Guys :)

For a speech that we are preparing in class, we are given the following questions to incorporate within it:

1) What have you learnt about belonging though your study of your prescribed text and related text?
2) What ideas about belonging do the composers of the two texts convey?
3) How do the composers of the two texts present their ideas about belonging?
4) Compare and/or contrast the prescribed text and your related text. How are they similar or different?

I just need some clarification and help as to what I have to do to effectively answer these questions within a 4-5 min speech.
For the first question would I have to incorporate personal pronouns and stuff to show what I have personally learnt throughout the unit?
For the second question, these are just about ideas and themes right?
I dont understand how to answer questions 3) and 4), could someone please break it down for me?

Please help!
Any help is good help :)
Thank youu:)

For the second question you are right they are just asking about the notions, concepts, ideas, themes (whichever one, they are interchangeable). For the third I think they are talking about the techniques the composer uses to convey the ideas you have discussed in question 2; for example in a movie you may talk about the cinematic techniques used and for a novel you may talk about the narrative vioce for example. Lastly, for the fourth question you have to link the ideas together in a way, it is important to think about your texts conceptually and not just the plot, you have to use the plot to support what you are talking about. A side note, for a essay if you get a question like question 4 you should find a common idea and write about how this is conveyed in each of the texts and they do not have to have the methods to doing so.

Hope this helps in someway :)

1) You could relate to recent life events and your overall sense of belonging.

2) Yes you are correct, ideas and themes are needed here. I.e. belonging to family, land, place, etc.

3) Techniques-- I.e. Book- metaphors, type of language expression. If a movie-- music, shot types (ECU, action, etc), Era of setting. Picture book- Setting, colour, vectors, Body language, Fashion, Object, Juxtaposition.

4) Compare- Show how things are similar or different. Contrast- Show how things are different or opposite. Why is it different- what themes/concepts have been used in the plot to convey the sense of belonging? (This question is getting you to think about formulating a thesis statement for essays). It aims to get you to express your ideas upon how intricate and multifaceted belonging actually is.

By no means is this an extensive list. However, it should help point you in the right direction. :)
