How do they align marks if 2 people ranked 1st internally,
and say 1 did well in the exam and the other badly?

I think they would average the two aligned marks and then both of the people ranked 1st would get the median aligned marks as their internal. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

it's the first two people in the course, so say three people A, B and C. A and B tie internally, but in external A gets 95 B, 90 and C, 93. A and B then for their internals gets the average of the two top marks so a 94

Yeah so I think both of you will get your internal marks as 70. But as aforementioned, I could be wrong.

No they don't neccessarily average the marks of the two people who tied first, they average the top two exam marks of your entire cohort. But yes, if you got 90 and the next highest mark in your grade was 80, you'd end up with an 85. Sorry

Really? I always thought they found a discrepancy between the marks of those tied first. I recall enoilgam saying so a while back.

I think a "50" is taken as an outlier. (at least for internals- the rest are >70 or something) But I don't think they average things to THAT extent.

I'm equal 1st in phy and will definitely get a lower external than the other guy (absolute beast) but I guess he will pull me up (unless I get less than 85)

Nah its just the top two exam marks in general. From the Board of Studies website:

"Note that if a school submits assessment marks with two (or more) students tied on the top assessment mark, then the top moderated assessment mark is equal to the mean of the top two (or more) examination marks. "

If I get 90 in a subject and everyone else gets 50s and 60s what would that mean to my end mark? mind you that I am ranked first in all subjects

nah, they take the two top performers in the exam.

E.g. I got 91 in the chemistry exam (and I was =4th internally) and one person tied first got 85 and then a person 7th got 86, the other person =1st did shit, like 83 or something and 3rd did shit too (~79 (he sent me an apology on fb hahaha (I was like "why apologise? It effects you more than me" spaz )))
The other two on =4th got 85 and 83, then 8th got ~78, 9th ~77 and 10th definitely got 76.
So the top internal was 89 (88.5) and the guy that came first got 87, I also got 87 ((91 + 83)/2 = 87) the other guy that came first got ~85, 3rd got ~83, one guy on 4th got 84, the other got 83, 7th got 83, 8th got ~78, 9th ~77, 10th 76.

So there is a real life example to go off.

if you're outright first then your external and assessment and HSC marks will all be the same and will be what you got in the exams, unless you do shit/someone does surprisingly well and you get their external as your assessment mark and then your exam and their exam are averaged for you HSC mark.
