So who's doing English next year?

how dodgy mc dodgeball were the options for semester 1? They use to have all these awesome subjects. I had so many to choose from in sem 2, but i only had one spot to fill.

i'm doing

Semester 1:
ENGL2646 Romantic Fictions
ENGL2632 British Romantic Literature

Semester 2:
ENGL2611 Jane Austen & her contemporaries

ive been wanting to do Jane Austen since i checked out usyd in yr 11!

has anyone in 3rd and subsequent years done any and recommed any??

Due to a total lack of any good units, I have chosen:

ENGL2632 British Romantic Literature, 1780-1830
ENGL2617 Postmodernism

Very tragic. :(

Ahaha, English...FUCK THAT SHIT. I'VE HAD TO PUT UP WITH 4 UNITS THIS YEAR, 3 THE YEAR BEFORE AND AN OVERLOAD OF THE BITCH FOR THE 10 YEARS BEFORE THAT.

"English...is gay"
Jane Austin; paraphrased.

I'm doing Engl2603- American Literature- Imagining America

and Engl2611- Jane Austen and her Contemporaries...

I'm thinking of changing my first semester choice though. There just wasn't much to choose from in first semester.

This is of course all dependent upon whether or not I fail Engl1005 this semester coz god knows it looks like I will.

oh dear god...hard core grammar. the exam is SO crap. i cant believe we have to know that passage for Part B. The last lecture really helped. But seriously, I'm finding it so hard to study for. lucky it's not worth tooo much. But if i fail the exam, but the (Very crappy) last essay that we did, then yeh, im goooooooone :(

I actually had a nightmare about that exam last night. I swear this subject is more stressful than all my others combined....

Heh. The last essay lol... no way I'm gonna pass it, I handed it in late and wrote it in 3 hours while on the phone consoling a friend who broke up with her boyfriend. I didn't even do the grammatical analysis, just kinda highlighted different sentences and didn't even provide a key. So you can imagine how I'm falling to pieces over this exam that I can't bring myself to study for....

Makes me wonder if majoring in english is for me....

oops :p

i assumed you did it because it's a compulsory subject for liberal studies and media comm.
i don't know anyone who didn't hate that subject. anyone doing straight arts should avoid it like the plague

I couldn't agree more, this year's second year subjects looked a lot more interesting, which is why i chose to major in english. But all the subjects which looked interesting this year aren't on next year's list eg. the american fiction unit (with books like virgin suicides and prozac nation) and the shakespeare unit.

yeah i'm a little sad to see that modernism has replaced ulysses with portrait of the artist

a lot of the really top films (including the likes of casino) is now missing from the postmodernism course too :(

lol nope. im doing ed/ arts (psych) and im going to teach english.

i dont get a lot of arts opportunities in my degree, coz psych takes up so much of it. i thought it'd be "valuable to my teaching degree". i actually liked it up until week 7. then it got so terribly hard.

i need to take a better approach to 2nd year english

I liked it for a few weeks as well.... then I just stopped attending and well... so failing is kind of my fault.

I chose stupid piece of shit language and image because I wanted a pretty timetable and the other english would mean I'd have a shit one. I knew it would be hard and I promised myself I'd work hard at it. Hah. That didn't last long at all. If the proposed timetable is correct for second year english, I think I might have to change my subject choice as well. No way am I going in every day if I can help it.

I'm majoring in English and Psyc as well grk_styl except not planning on teaching, I'd kill myself before going back to high school :p

i did lit & cinema and lit & politics
i liked both courses generally
cinema had a lot of texts i liked - though lots of people hated the kafka...
literature and politics had some slow novels to read at the beginning but the 20th century stuff was quite interesting

i also did the 'special studies' course; the canon and the language
neither are amazing fun, but i believe that's their function
the canon was ok but the language was atrocious.
i think they've been conflated for 2006+...
