A few questions. 1 on 1 Tutoring > Class Tutoring? Should I drop Maths? etc etc. (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I'm a Year 11 student at a fairly crappy private school (RPCS ._.), anyway, I'm currently doing the following subjects:
Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Business Studies, Adv. English, 2U+Ext Maths. I chose these as I wanted good scaling and other subjects I was absolutely not interested in, in exception of Economics and maybe Ancient.

Currently I'm feeling pretty good in Chem, Physics, Biology, it's a lot of information to take in but I understand most of it and just confirm with studying at home. Business is also fairly easy, Adv. is ok. Now, with Maths, I feel like I am able to understand everything going on in 2U, but not everything in Ext1, so getting a maths tutor should help that. I also have the problem of being able to understand everything in class but do extremely crappy in tests, I got a B last year out of sheer luck imo.

Now the questions:

• Currently my private tutor costs $80 an hour and comes every week for an hour, is it worth it for a one-on-one? Or is it better to be in a classroom? I'd like the teacher to go at my pace but I'd like to also like to know if my pace is too slow.
• I'm considering Engineering but I'm only slightly interested, and I'm more interested in commerce and have higher grades in that subject. If I start being absolutely destroyed in Ext1 Maths, should I drop Phys and Ext1 and move to Eco?
• If I am considering to continue Maths, what do you guys recommend for me to do if I can't do well in tests but in class?
• I think my family is planning to move to another suburb this year, is it better to stay at my current school or move to a better one around that area (Putney)?
• Oh and, on the NSW Students Online Site, one of my 2014 grades is wrong (History is a C instead of B), should I ask the principal about this or is there something else going on?

Like strawberrye, curious about background & qualification of your tutor to charge $80/hr. Maybe if it was a 2-hr lesson, maybe he won't haved charged $80/hr. It is also possible he is charging you $20 for travel.

But for you, my guess is a 2-hr lesson would be necessary. However brilliant your tutor, how much can he cover in 1 hour? And since you are obviously not that strong in your MX1, you would need more than 1 hour. Also, for you, I think a 1-on-1 would be better. I'm sure I can tutor as well if not better than your tutor, but never ever considered charging more than $60/hr (plus travel, if far) even for the highest level maths, let alone only MX1.

Koreans pay more than that tbh. My cousins gets $100/hr and they're still in high school. Welcome to the private school life lol.
Advantages of 1 on 1 is the accessibility in terms of asking for questions and your pathway compared to class environment where they're stuck to a prescribed structure so there no time to help you individually.

They should not be $80 an hour - they are just milking you - especially for Maths. If it was an English HSC marker (my tutor charges $90/hr) then understandable.

1 on 1 is always better than class tutoring IMO. They can mould their lessons to your needs and can focus on your weaknesses and correct your mistakes personally. They also spend more time on you in that one hour, instead of being shared around by the class.

And just a note on your mentality about good scaling and subjects. If your grade does terrible in any of your subjects, there will be no good scaling. So make sure the subjects you choose are subjects which you enjoy and good at. I know a lot of people who thought Legal Studies and Business being inferior to Economics (which it is generally) but they performed so well in Legal Studies etc and still achieved the 99+ ATAR.

wow that is really expensive, you could go to a top tutoring centre for that price.

At the tutoring place i go to you do a 2.5-3 hour class lesson each week and then you have at least 1 1.5 hour tutorial each week in which a tutor can help you with questions and explain concepts and things again however these lessons are in groups of 4. If you are struggling then 1 on 1 is the best way I think as you can work at your own pace, however most tutoring places would be happy to explain things to you and help you with extra stuff.

I would reconsider your tutor if I was you unless they have some amazing track record of tutoring or something.

So I don't blame the teacher for including $20 for travel out of the $100. Also, don't forget: for a senior Maths teacher, his opportunity cost is high; he would not be motivated to teach for less than that, unlike a fresh HSC graduate, who'd be very happy to receive $30/hr.
