This is a multiple choice Q in my half yearly, which had me stuck, but both of my 'suggested' answers were wrong.

REad the question and take note of which option you would choose.

Strategic alliances allow businesses to support each others goals. which businesses share a strategic alliances.

a. caltex and BP
b. woolworths and kmart
c. sony and ericcson
d. IGA and woolworths









a. Caltex and BP are in competition, so no
b. kmart is owned by coles myer = coles in competition wiht woolies so no
c. this is the answer. I thought there was no more ericson and they merged and created a seperate business to SONY and ericson
d. this is what i chose, i thought maybe IGA was a smaller chain from woolies.

thoughts on this question?

sorry to dissprove you, but i chose the right answer from 1st view..

A, B, and D are all in direct competition....

havn't you ever heard of the brand 'Sony Errikson'... thus the strategic alliance

and yes... i would have to agree that it is a gay question.... as the syllabus doesnt require you to know which businesses are in strategic alliances..

yeah ... but you gotta think, strategic alliances aren't mergers. Strategic alliance is when 2 or more business collaborate together (pooling their resources together), etc.

i got sony ericson as well ... it'd be alrite if this was a short answer questions stating:
"State an example of a strategic alliance between companies and discuss why they did this."

yeah .. i agree. gh3y question.

I chose C as well because all other companies are in direct competition.

I don't know the actual status of Sony and Ericcson's relationship, but it's possible that they have a Strategic Alliance, so that was my answer.

yup, i got C on the first try too
