yo guys

what are the advantages of co-op over cadetships? Atm I have secured a cadetship and so have my friends but theyre applying to unsw accounting co-op. i always thought cadetships were better than co-op cuz you get to stay with a company for a while but with co-op you jump from one company to another without realy fully settling in. and cadetship is like a lot more work experience too???

imo cadetships are better

you are right about the staying with a company for a while bit bcos coop internships arent long and the you are also right about length of work experience: cadetship = years of experience while co-op is like 9 months. besides a few internships (coop) is not as good as an actual permanent spot thruout uni (cadetships).

if you already have a cadetship dont bother applying for coop honestly because
1. cadetship is better
2. co op takes a while to apply for, filling out those many questions about extracurricular and stuff, meaning.you could spend that time applying to regular scholarships(there are so many seriously chexk out unsw usyd uts websites) or studying for hsc...

waste of time rly to apply for coop when you already got a cadetship....they say time is money during hsc year

my friend vivian from unsw got into accounting co op but didnt like it because of the structure of the program and partially bcos theres no big 4 in co op , unlike cadetship, and so applied for first yr uni cadetship and got in and now shes satisfied at deloite

Here's what seremify wrote a couple weeks ago:
Co-ops are just a way to try different organisations and experience the role you'll have in them. The key thing to step back and remember is accounting is just like any other specialised back-office function in that it can be a support function of a business (e.g. the accounting department at a company which does the books and tax returns), it can be part of the business (e.g. the finance function in a modern organisation to help make strategic decisions) or it can be the revenue generating business (e.g. in an accounting firm, the accounting services are provided for other organisations for a fee). A cadetship essentially locks you into the latter where you're doing it for the benefit of clients and with that comes a different mindset/focus and level you'll need to operate at which may or may not be what you're interested in.

I don't really have a view on UTS vs UNSW coop nowadays- both are great programs with great sponsors, and have slightly different timeframes/benefits as a result. I will add that BAcc coop always seems very tightly knit and is very well known in the industry.

As for career progression, this comes back to the first point in terms of the role of accounting in the particular organisation and with that, comes different 'business cases' to justify the costs or business need for offering progression.
check sponsor list on unsw website . no big4 are sponsors which sucks
UTS Accounting Co-op has Big 3 and round 2 is still going - worth checking out @OP

To Op, I'd say it depends which firm the cadetship is with, and whether it's a firm you want to build a career with. As I mentioned in the other post, a co-op is a great way to try different organisations where accounting is given a different focus so you can compare them against each other, but it's more akin to work experience as opposed to the longer term career development you would expect from working continuously with the one firm/organisation over the same period of time.
