Hi,

1. Firstly what is a critical response? I'm not really sure I have to do

For the assessment, I have to form a critical response in relation to Act 3 scene 1 , so do I analyse it?

2. Also any views/comments on how Act Three scene 1 in Hamlet falls in the play and the key understanding this scene provides for the responder?

So far I got that this scene shows to the responder:
- The conflict between Ophelia and Hamlet and how Hamlet's strange behaviour has emotionally effected Ophelia.
- Hamlet's suffering with his soliloquy "to be or not to be"
- Of Hamlet's madness which is witnessed by Claudius and Polonius, as a consequence Claudius sees Hamlet as a threat to his throne and plans to kill him in England.

Thanks, am i on the right track?, appreciate your help.

Hi

You are on the right track.
Looking back the syllabus the point of the Critical Study of Text is for us" to explore and evaluate a specific text and its reception in a range of contexts".
So you could include comments on how it would have been performed and responded to in its day, how an Oedipal context be developed and portrayed for Hamlet, how a contemporary reading might protray HAmelt and his relaitonships with hsi partents nad his girlfirend - nto to meiton the issue of royalty.

You should check out this:

The Hamlet Seminar - Seymour Theatre Centre - The University of Sydney

Good luck!
