I got an offer for Actuarial Studies/Commerce at UNSW and I not really sure what courses to choose. I think the most popular option is MATH1151, ACCT1501, ECON1101 and MGMT1001. But can I do more than 4 courses?

These are the courses you should enrol in:

- MATH1151
- ACCT1501
- ECON1101
- FINS1613 or MGMT1001 (doesn't really matter although many tend to do FINS1613 as it is more relevant towards your other courses and helps for ACTL1101 in SEM2)

NOTE: Do FINS1613 in SEM1 only, even if you decide not to do it this year and end up doing MGMT, do it in SEM1 next year, don't do it in SEM2 since it is harder to do well in.

You can only do a maximum of 4 courses (24 UoC) at this point in time, but it is possible to overload i.e. doing more than 24 UoC per semester from 2nd year once you have completed a minimum of 48 UoC i.e. 8 courses. Actuarial is already hard as it is so I definitely wouldn't recommend you going down that path since it will just create unnecessary stress for you. Overloading also requires approval and this only makes it less appealing to do so since it is big pain and sometimes other factors are used (such as WAM) when deciding to approve your request to overload.

Hope it helps :)

Why? What should I pick in sem 2? I enrolled for MATH1151, ACCT1501, ECON1101 and FINS1613 for sem 1
Yep, your enrolment is fine for SEM1, in SEM2 most people usually pick ACTL1101, ACCT1511, ECON1102 & MATH1251. Don't worry about it for now, you will enrol for SEM2 courses sometime around May so you will plenty of time to plan out your SEM2 timetable.

Ok, if so when should I do MGMT1001 then?
Do it in either your 2nd/3rd/4th year, it is a really bad course and very irrelevant to any other course in the degree so it is not a problem if you leave it till too late.

My advice is do FINS1613 later, once you done 1-2 ACTL courses it becomes extremely easy and its literally free marks. Doing it straight in sem 1 you'll probably find it more difficult and won't really help in your first actuarial course either.

I did it after 2 actuarial courses, easiest 95 of my life learnt the course 2 days before exam

If u ever have any subject that requires ACADEMIC WRITING (essays etc.....)then do it ASAP otherwise lose huge marks if u dont know how to write academically properly

Its alright not to do MGMT1001 before you have those 'writing' subjects. But personally I lost 5/20 in my MARK2051 assignment w/o proper academic research.... I regretted so much

Does MATH1151, ACCT1501, ECON1101 and FINS1613 have academic writing or every course has it?

These courses don't. If u see there is 'essay' 'individual/group research project' 'report' under assessment items in the course outline, then that course has it

I am doing MGMT1001, ACCT1501, MATH1151 and ECON1101 this sem.

I am now strongly considering doing FINS1613 second year, first sem, based on everyone's advice.

That would mean I do MATH1251, ACCT1502, ECON1102 and ACTL1101 sem 2?

How does that plan sound guys? :)

Will FINS1613 be quite difficult in first year first semester? (HSC 2u & 3u)

Can anyone elaborate on this?

Academic writing requires substantial academic research. To write up a research assignment, there are lots of rules and techniques. If u do other subjects ahead of MGMT1001, you have the risk of getting rid of. (Lost 5% MARK2051 course mark without proper research)

Some subjects don't require academic writiing. In that case, it may be 'safe'

Never do FINS1613 in sem 2. Do it in sem 1 as its much more easier to score well and harder to fail
