Keep the original hem?!?!

Provided it's a lightweight fabric this is possible but highly fiddly. If we're talking standard heavy denim, then the answer is no.

Why on earth do you want to keep the original hem?

Anyway - you should be able to find some tailors in the local paper. If you can't, get in contact with me... I do pant hems for $8. Probably easier to find someone local, though.
i dunno what kinda jeans i have... its standard denim.

i want to keep the hem because when you get it alterated it looks different to the original. I dont need to tell everyone that i need custom made pants!

The better seamstresses can keep the original hem and sew it back on and the stitching doesn't show because it's just above the hemline. I had my first pair done at a shop in Paddington ($20 I think) and from then onwards I just copied what they did at home with my other ones. It's quite easy and unnoticeable.

The reason why you might one to keep the original hem is because cutting it off gives you an edge that's too clean and dry. I use to use light sandpaper and sand it until it looks right again, but it's really annoying having to do that. Plus, you need to find thread that matches exactly and that's sometimes really difficult with jeans.
this sucks i cant afford 20$. whats this world coming to? are people my age being taken advantaged of because we are vertically challenged?

You are a shorty! I'm 167cm [last checked in year 7... I don't think I've grown much since then] and if we stood side-by-side you'd just reach my shoulders. lol.

Anyway, good luck with the whole jeans altering thing. I agree with keeping the original hems. I don't like the look of obviously-altered jeans.
thanks? what am i meant to say to something like that?

Just Jeans still do alterations. But I don't know if they do it to jeans they don't sell, if that makes sense.

Try yellow pages for alterations shops near you.
I take it to a little chinese alterations shop down the road from me and it cost around $12, so don't go paying more than $15. it's not worth it...

if your mum/grandmother can do it, then bingo!
where do you get yours done? and did they keep the original hem?

i would get my mum to do it, but last time i asked her, she did it 2 inches higher than i told her to. She said that it was still too long.

i thought this thread was going to be about porn

but as for keeping the original hem, that's gonna be hard, if you get the jeans altered well enough no one will be able to tell the difference unless the hem is really distinctive or something. i always, always have to get pants/jeans taken up and it never looks bad or out of place. just dont use the wrong colour thread.
