Hello. I got offered a position in the commerce- professional accounting degree and need a bit of advice. I was just wondering if it mattered which units I put down for 1st session and 2nd. Do any of the units correlate whereby some of the content learnt in one unit might make it a bit easier to understand another unit???? There are 7 compulsory units and these are ACCG100-accounting 1A, ACCG101-accounting 1B, ACST101-techniques and elements of finance, BBA102-principles of management, ECON111-microeconomic principles, MKTG101-marketing fundamentals and STAT170-introductory statistics. Any advice on which I should do first session considering I didn't do business studies in high school only economics???????
Hi Sanndiiee,

It doesnt matter which units you do for session 1 and 2 as they don't really overlap much. Although for Accounting 1A and 1B, you have to do 1A before you can do 1B. So i would do 1A in session 1 and 1B in session 2. Don't worry about assumed knowledge for business, they teach you everything from scratch so you don't need to know anything beforehand. The only thing you need to know already is 2 unit maths, and that's only for ACST101. I can tell you that BBA102 is really easy so you might want to do that in the session where you're doing some more difficult subjects.

Hey, when doing the double degree in commerce and law are you missing out on any subjects regarding the law degree? Are you any less qualified with law?
Sorry no one has ever really explained this to me?
Thankyou!
Hi aliciakendall95,

No you will not miss out on any law subjects if you do a double degree. You will do all the subjects required to get registered as a lawyer in NSW. It kind of works like this, a pure law degree (not combined with another degree) is only 3 years while a double degree with law is 5 years, so the extra 2 years is used for your commerce subjects. Hope that helps!

Thanks heaps gapathetic. I'm thinking of putting down for first session accg100, bba102, acst101 and econ111 then leaving the other 3 (accg101, stat170 and mktg101) for the second session if the timetable works in my favour. If it does you think that should be alright?

So What happens to the commerce part? We only do 2 years but those who just do B comm by itself, end up doing 3 years...

you're exempted from the business law units that students who do commerce by itself must do. however, depending on your commerce major, your degree may take longer than five years, based on a standard four subject per semester loading.

Yes, what barbecuedflava said and also people that do just B Commerce can take 2 majors, while double degree people can only take 1 major. If you major in something like accounting or finance, then your commerce side will take 3 years + to finish (combined with your law subjects). But for other majors, you MIGHT end up finishing commerce earlier but would still have to stay back for law.

Yep, that sounds pretty good to me.

I am doing international Business right now and I'm hoping to get into comm/law next year at Macq. What are the requirements and the process in transferring from an external uni?

Annyeong!

This should help you:
http://mq.edu.au/future_students/undergraduate/how_to_apply/undergraduate_faqs/

Apart from that I don't really know the specific details for transfer in terms of going to comm/law from another uni. I would assume that your ATAR be competitive and you just try your best to get the highest GPA possible so as to maximise your competitiveness. This is just my own knowledge from USYD/UNSW requirements. But I also assume it should be easier to get into Macq law as opposed to the other city universities. Anyways, why didn't you consider Macq for first year? A little bird told me its easy to internal transfer in Macq....then again the little bird might have been retarded...so don't mark my words.

I was a bit silly not considering Macq uni first year :(... Made a huge mistake. But at this rate I am heading to Macq uni in 2nd year to do comm/law :).

Well if that's what you want to do, I hope you'll make it! Just try your best in whatever course you're doing now! :)

I'm only a first year so don't know how comm/law will turn out in Macq, but from what I hear it should be good!

Well i'm using 1st year university as an experiment to see the ambience of uni and then 2nd year would be serious business.

But yeah, I hope you enjoy 1st year also!

I am hoping my ATAR 91, with a Distinction would probably get me into MQ LAW. Hopefully, I will be doing it in 2013!

Hello all. I'm wondering if this thread is still active.

I'm a student from Melbourne and have received offers from Monash University for the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce/Law from Macquarie University.
At the moment, I'm weighing between the two as although I am intent on pursuing Law as an Area of Study, I have yet to actually study law myself. As a result, I'm unsure whether as to pursue Com/Law immediately in my 1st year of University studies of try out a year of Commerce before proceeding with a transfer.

I like how these undergraduate Commerce/Law degrees can be completed in 5 years. However, I was hoping to understand more of studies at Macquarie itself. I'm nervous as I have barely heard of it as a university and worry if potential employers in the future would look down on the alma matter and disregard the effort I put into the course.

So between Monash Commerce and Macquarie Commerce/Law, might I ask which would you choose and the reasons why?

Hey mate,
I got offered an applied finance/commerce degree at macq and my atar was 87.25 (somehow I still managed to get in even though cut-off was more like 88 or 89). Anyways, I was wondering how hard it will be for me to transfer to law/commerce after a semester? Will only my tertiary results be counted (the Macq Undergraduate FAQ said whichever one was highes) instead of ATAR + WAM unlike Sydney Uni?

Also, if its based purely on results and if the subjects are all weighted the same, then surely doing arts would be better since (I assume) getting a distinction average there would be easier than getting a distinction average in applied finance/commerce?

You have two choices, if you want to do Comm/Law at MQ:

1. First option, get at least a D-average WAM which is around 75 and try apply via UAC by the end of the year.

2. Second option, you can apply mid year and hope that there is not many strong competitors with high ATAR's. I was able to succeed through this option in July 2012 with a pure ATAR of 91.00.
