Minimal sleep doesn't affect you until the day after. For example: if you go out on the Friday night, you won't feel the affects of lack of sleep until the Sunday (you may feel the affects of the alcohol before then though...)
So, it is important to get a good night's sleep the night before exam-eve rather than exam-eve... Even if you go to bed late and have a sleep in, get the hours needed to keep your body well and truely functioning.
