Starting to fill in my preferences for UAC, interested in mainly Comp Sci, but at UTS I can't find such a course.

I've heard that UTS has a different name for Computer Science, so would it be 'Bachelor of Science in IT'?

I don't like the idea that it is business oriented, I'd honestly prefer vanilla CS (similar to UNSW, but unfortunately don't have the ATAR).

I'm also interested in Software Engineering, but as a backup (CS has a lot more diverse options).

What would be the best pathway to a career in Software developing? (Minus the business, IT stuff)

And if you are currently doing the course, how is it? How is UTS overall? It focuses a lot on technology, so I'm assuming it'd have high speed internet (lol)

You questions need to be more specific. For example, what part of software? Actual coding or creating, development, etc?

Actual coding, but perhaps even project managing in the future? Definitely start off developing, and maybe after achieving a certificate in project managing.

https://www.uts.edu.au/future-students/find-a-course/courses/c10148 <---- I plan to do 'Enterprise Systems Development' as my major, if I do end up in this course.

Like most people I'll be trying to independently learn some aspects of the programming world (mobile apps, web developing, machine learning etc), and perhaps develop a decent portfolio.

Do you think this a good pathway?

Edit: To further extrapolate, I haven't tried all of what you say, "Actual coding or creating, development" so I have yet to decide which to focus on (I'm sure I'll like them all).

I haven't taken any computer subjects (scaling, duh lol), but have an interest in it. I also tried some programming, haven't been able to much lately due to HSC.

It's not the same as Computer Science, the Bachelor of Science in IT doesn't have mathematical or involved theoretical subjects as a CS course would.

That makes no sense, all of those words mean the same thing.

Maybe I should have been more clear also.

Actual coding = just do some random stuff for money
Creating = building and contributing to CS
Development = seeing a project through

hmmm, yeah I noticed that as well. Do you think this quite disadvantageous in the software developing world (jobs, employment, etc)? Like, would it be then considered an inferior course?

Edit: If it comes to it, I'd be willing to independently learn it through Open Course ware (from Mit, maybe even UNSW)

There is no Computer Sci in UTS... i think the closest thing is Software Engo... or you could do the Sci in IT in UTS and then transfer into usyd or unsw for computer sci the next year.

does that answer your questions?
One more!

http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/cbk90782.html

At the top they state 'free choices of electives' (to fill up the remaining 48 vacant credit points), does this mean I can choose any electives at all?
For example scientific computing (link - http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/smj02057.html ), perhaps instead of being restricted to 12 credit points, use the remaining 24 to choose the other 24 credits?

I'm asking this because some other sub-major they're offering have some restrictions (i.e you can only choose one or two of the 6).

Sorry, and another enquiry?

Some of these other free electives seem more theoretical and Mathematics based, perhaps it can be considered a Computer Science degree if I decide to sub-major in these?

Like these (look more CS based):
- Physics (http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/smj01012.html)
- Scientific Computing (http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/smj02057.html)
- Data Analytics (http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/smj02065.html)

I noticed you're doing Computer Science UNSW, I doubt I'll be able to make it in, but knowing that UTS is offering these electives has surprised me, perhaps I will be able to somewhat graduate w/ a CS degree after all?

They offer some electives that still appeal to me (including some CS based ones), I don't think it'll be worthwhile for me to transfer. Though UTS may not have as much prestige as the other two I believe I'd be able to make up for it by undertaking some independent projects (create a portfolio, extra curricular activities etc).

And their facilities look great :)

I am not familiar with the UTS stuff but the courses you linked look like lower level stuff. if I read correctly you want to major/minor in that? in which case means that you need to be doing higher level courses to get the knowledge.

again sub-major/minoring will mean you will have to have superior knowledge in those areas. have a look at the scientific one again; they're all intro courses. You need to be doing the more indepth stuff.

you can get into CompSci @UNSW with maybe like 82-85?

Thats true.. That is why I am aiming to do ICT Eng/Bus in UTS. 1) They give a practical experience 2)Awesome facilities and support 3)Close to home...
Maybe I will consisder to do my masters in Usyd.. (for the prestige)

but also remember..don't change your direction just for the University.

Hi. I believe that you're correct - you can do the subjects in that science computing major provided that you have also done the perquisites (Found at the top of the page when you click on the subject number)

I'm not too sure about that second point though.

Are you talking about the FEAS? Yeah, I'll definitely will be applying for that, but I'd rather not get my hopes up.

Hmm, I'll speak with some of my school's IT teachers to check if they are introductory. If they are, I think I'll probably go take the software electives, perhaps major in them.

Thanks for your help man!
