Photography is a great hobby - a little on the expensive side of things most of the time, though. What kind of camera does everyone have? I'm a bit of a traditionalist, preferring my SLR Olympus OM-20. Film really does it for me - shame about the processing charge - but unless I had a DSLR (like my girlfriend's EOS350D), there'd be no reason for me to change.

Now THAT'S an understatement (if you're into SLRs)!

Alot of people progressing from P&S to dSLR don't realise that buying the camera itself is just the beginning of the wallet squeezing. :)

Currently I'm using the Canon 400D. The 350D is an awesome camera.. it's especially useful when you and your partner use same company cameras (lens sharing!).

I've been eyeing the EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS USM for awhile now - ~$1850 (goes right back to that 'expensive' talk).. :(

Love my Canon EOS 400D. It's my baby.

And yep, I'm a sucker for the expensive hobby. Pretty well all my cash is spent on new lenses and digital editing software. I love taking simple photos and just leaving them be, but I prefer dig editing afterward. I'm hoping to finally get Photoshop CS2 for my b'day next week.

I've never felt an immense urge in my life as much as today to mug somebody - I saw some customer at work (I work in IT sales) with two Nikon D2Xs dSLRs around his shoulders, both with an SB600/800 Speedlight aswell as some (I presume) expensive telephoto lenses on each body. Gotta be atleast $20,000 worth of Nikon equipment around his shoulders.. hope he didn't have to walk too far lol. Yikes.

I've been a Canon user all my life but I have great respect for Nikon cameras (love the D80).. hope the customer didn't see the boner that was about to explode out of my pants.

Try this site, theres alot of 'actual' tips for your day to day shooting and the best thing is his aussie! (canon user though) :)

This is my DA site, still trying to build up some photos for a portfolio later on. I feel that you really don't need a DSLR for good photography, most of the shots in the DA was shot with a Canon A620 but I tend to go for a more over processed look so the inadequacy of the lens ain't as noticable.

Though, being self contradictory, I did buy a Pentax K10D two weeks ago and I feel the LBA setting in already...

hi all :) kinda new here.. well i dont post very often.. and only just spotted this photography thread!

okay so for those wondering: i shoot with a nikon D70s. got the kitbitch, tamron 28-75/2.8 and nikkor 70-200/2.8 VR.
the latter two lenses are absolutely amazing... even the tamron at 2.8 blows the crap out of the kitbitch at 3.5!
bought both only 2weeks ago.. still getting used to the mass of the 70-200 haha even the body struggles- the mount feels err.. creaky!

i shoot mainly live music and events, did alot of jobs for the school..
will post some images once i get them watermarked and PP'd.

if anyone else shoots live events, feel free to drop me a message.. could prolly work on something together- changing lenses is annoying. better to share jobs/have two bodies.

mini-meet anyone?

Nice dude, very nice. I'm sure you were keen on taking advantage of the $500 cash back for this combo. ;)

I'm a big fan of the 24-105L (plan on getting one after going full-frame). Tell us about how your new equipment goes.

Well i took this photos a while back with that lens.

I cropped the edges. Same crop factor.

Here's one i took 2 days ago.

There's just one more lens i wanna get. Canon EF 16-35L. And that's pretty much it. After that, i'll just go for full frame (5D replacement) if i really want wider than 16mm.

For the 24-105L, you can actually hear the Image Stabiliser working. It sounds like a whispering steel wheel turning. And i love how fast the auto-focus is. Can't see any significant soft edges in f/4. Maybe i got a lucky copy.

The weird thing is, the lens is heavier than the body. Which means when you grip it with your right hand only, you have to grip is even more righter because the lens is heavy...which makes you shoot like an unco.

P.S: I love RAW! I shoot 98% in RAW. Just so convenient for post-processing.

Yeah, my 17-40L is heavier than my camera body. Feels strange switching between that and the super-light 50mm f/1.8.

My 17-40L isn't that sharp at f/4. Corners aren't an issue but the general sharpness at f/4 is. Once stopped down to f/5.6, it's a ripper. Not a huge issue though, since it's a landscape lens.. and who shoots landscapes at f/4?

Here's one from the other day:

I think I need to get myself the 17-55 f/2.8.. much better walk-around for my 1.6 crop. Once I go full-frame the 17-40 automatically becomes a nice super wide-angle.

As for soft edges, you need something to compare it to for it to become apparent. Take some test shots at f/4 & f/5.6-8 and compare the corners. But in general the corners should be looking decent for a lens of that calibre.

Nice gallery.

It is my personal opinion that APS-C is here to stay, so I think I'll always have a 1.6x body along with a FF when I decide to go that direction.

Just ordered the 17-55. I'm pretty excited, although I'm also concerned about all the issues regarding dust. I'm gonna take my 17-40L to Canon Australia on Monday to see if they can calibrate it or see if there's something wrong with the copy. The more I shoot with it, the more I'm finding the f/4 performance unacceptable. If they find something wrong with it, I'll try to get them to give me a RA so I can exchange it for another lens.
