Applied Finance w/ Commerce-Professional Accounting - Picking units/subjects + Majors (1 Viewer)

Hey all first year student for 2012 here,

Sorry to bug you but with elective units where do we find these in terms of arranging the timetable? Is there a designated list to what electives we are allowed to do? I gotta take an elective at the 100 level for 3CP ... Does the elective continue across both semester 1 and 2? Or how else does your CP > 14 as required? I seem to only have 12 for each semester atm.

Also when undertaking units such as ACCG100 and ACCG101 is it recommendedto do it in the same semester or is it more common to do ACCG101 in the second semester and lets say ACCG100 in semester 1?


Lastly are there majors in this degree? I think I may be confusing myself even more lol

Basically in this degree you'll need to undertake a people and planet unit (both of which are electives), any commerce subject worth three credit points (or one unit) at 300 level (which you shouldn't worry about till your third year) and nine credit points worth of general electives (three units). You are entitled to study up to 10 100 level subjects in total if I recall correctly (please make sure you confirm with an academic advisor because I am not 100% sure).

You can basically choose to take these whenever you like. A normal full time study load is 12 credit points a semester (or four units), which is really what most people are studying. This means that in a normal year you will study 24 credit points or 8 units. Three units are also considered a full time load and many students find three subjects much more manageable.

Click on the link above of your study plan and click on the subjects you're interested in studying. You will notice that some will have "prerequisites" (more common in second and third year subjects). A prerequisite is basically a subject you have to study before you're allowed to take the unit you're interested in. ACCG101 is typically taken in the second semester because ACCG100 is a prerequisite. In other words, you will not be permitted to do them together in the first semester.

In regards to majors, you're studying two specialised degrees and as such there are no majors. You're basically focusing on accounting and applied finance, both of which are specific areas of study. You will get a deeper insight into these areas because you will study more units than somebody with a normal commerce degree doing a double major in accounting and finance.

In regards to that statement are we advised what electives are available or am I looking at something else.

In the link provided outlining my course are the electives the units towards the end of each 100, 200 and 300 level e.g. STAT170 and STAT171 for 100 level units? Or completely different units away from the Business and Economics Faculty?

Anyway, in regards to the electives, I believe that we are able to choose anything we wish to study, that is not included in the "What You Will Study"

Yeah, thats right. You'll have to make sure you meet the prerequisites for it though.

Yeah maybe I am over worrying but I can't help it I feel like I'm back in Yr 6 heading over to Yr 7.

Haha, sasuage fest? Really? I would imagine that there would be more females doing finance/commerce/etc., as opposed to courses like engineering

I'm worrying too haha o~o;; I posted so much questions on the MQ Chatter Thread cause I didn't understand what the enrollment website wanted me to do. xD It didn't help that my UNSW friends were posting their timetimes on FB and I was like "Why can't I do my timetable for MQ?!?"

- It's not one of our NCCW(s)

Electives are not the "units towards the end of each 100, 200 and 300 level". Those are [Required] units where we choose one or the other to study.
Electives may be completely different units away from the Business and Economics Faculty if you want. For example, a friend of mine is going to do a language (Jap) unit and her course is Game Development or smthing

what's the difference between people and planet units and general electives units? Does that mean the credit points from the people and planet units do not count towards the 9 credits points worth of general elective units? And how to I choose these general elective units when enrolling in units?

A general elective unit may be ANY unit you wish. They allow you to study whatever you want, so long as you meet the pre-requisites.

People and Planet units are a bit more restrictive, they must be selected from a set list. One must be be taken from outside the department of your program of study/major and the other must be from outside the faculty of program of study/major.

For example, I study Ancient History, which is a department of the Faculty of Arts. One of my PP units must be taken outside of my department (but still within the Faculty of Arts, if i wish eg: anthropology) and the other must be taken outside of my faculty (so i must take something that falls under the Faculty of Science, Human Sciences or Business & Economics).

They were introduced to make us "understand the challenges and issues facing the world at present and develop the capacity to be engaged and ethical local and global citizens" and also to give us "an understanding of what it means to live in the social world, and to develop cultural or social literacy".

Load of crap and a waste of time & money if you ask me.

Correct, they are different requirements within a set program of study.

And how to I choose these general elective units when enrolling in units?

You have a look at what's available in the handbook and have a think about what you would like to use your electives for. Do you want to learn a language? Study something that interested you in high school? Just do something different from your main discipline? Study more advanced topics within your discipline not required by your set program of study?

hi guys, im currently in yr 12, im planning to do applied finance at mq, but not sure whether to do it with commerce: pro. Accounting or economics. Just wondering which is better?, harder, better for jobs and what kind of jobs e.g. possible to do investment banking?, etc. Please let me know if u have any idea? Thanks
