Are music degrees still worth it? (1 Viewer)

Every year seems to be the worst year for these so-called music production schools. So many students asking for refunds or disputing their invoices. Even this SEO expert from Denver quit on learning music production.

Either they are moving online or just disappearing. Do you think it's still important to get a music degree when you can get a course online or heck even for free on Youtube. I can see getting expert help when it comes to playing the violin or perhaps a piano but other than that, is it still worth going to school for music (Post-secondary)? Whether it's diving deep into theory or composition? These schools charge like crazy too.

Especially with sites like Soundbetter, Splice, Ritc, Recording Review and heck even Fiverr has grammy award producers on now. I heard a lot of these music producers are giving up on their dreams and becoming dental implant specialists or something else in the medical field. Perhaps healthcare was their true passion after all.

Im going to a music college (JMC) for audio engineering/sound production next year. I have been accepted and have also accepted my offer for feb. Im doing it to get a hands on feel of the industry and how it works. I for sure wont be able to have 100 thousand dollar tables at my house so going here gives me the best experience with the best equipment so that I am prepared for the best when I leave. Courses also offer internships so its so much easier to jump straight into thr work force after graduation. This is my take as a future audio student.

For musicians its probably a little bit more of a difficult decision. It would be an awesome opportunity to experience how it is to work with other people and get proper industry experience through internships and perfect your craft through people who have also done it.

Id say go for it, apply, try it out, dont like it? drop.

@huuu - That's awesome. No doubt learning from someone who is proven (Especially in the industry) would be something else. I'm just saying with sites like Soundbetter, Fiverr and a few others (Where you can actually work with grammy award-winning producers, engineers, etc) right away, it's pretty killer too. I do believe structure and the 'details' is what separates the wannabee producers from the great. That's why on Youtube it's just information overload right now . . . I hope you get a good teacher.
