Yes, they are definitely necessary.

Techniques are needed for discussion, but keep in mind it's also dependent on your critical evaluation of these techniques as well as making sure you're answering the question and not veering off. You should be fine if you're already doing this.

Techniques are just ways of describing how we use language. Every sentence has techniques. If you don't include them, you're missing a big part of the analysis.

They're kinda important but I've seen essays like one guy from the grade above got 19/20 in mod A for a trial and he had like 1 technique in a whole paragraph. Instead of putting techniques, he just blended the quote as part of the sentence, which I think is okay too.
