I'm in Year 10 right now and just wondering if the preliminary courses are tested in the HSC exams.

Thanks for answering! :)

MOSTLY no. Exception is mathematics, stuff you do in yr 11 can account for up to 30% of the paper. But really you need the stuff you learn in yr 11 maths to do yr 12 maths so it's not as scary as it sounds.

A few subjects, the skills you learn in prelim or some content is useful background knowledge. But many subjects cover substantially different ground in the HSC compared to prelim, that you honestly shouldn't need to do the prelim.

But yeah, pretty much not. You can sleep in yr 11, pick up the game in yr 12 and do decently.

Definitely, what you do in prelim maths will be in your HSC - the percentage of prelim questions changes each year but there will definitely be some questions in it.
For the other subjects, I don't think so but its important to know the prelim course because even though the hsc course might be super different, the basic knowledge you learn in prelim is still really important. The main thing is to get use to knuckling down and studying but prelim is definitely not that bad :)

Study consistently in Year 11 young one. You must understand everything in Year 11 to score a top HSC mark.

Um, no. I know people who did absolutely nothing through Year 11 and scored a 98+ atar.

Also, to OP; what are your subjects next year? We'll be able to tell you what you should know for Prelim for those courses if you tell us.

If you slack off in year 11, you will get ass fucked in year 12. You won't know what hit you.

Use year 11, to develop a sound study routine that won't let you down in year 12.

Some course content is built upon concepts in Year 11.

How many of those people went back and revisited their Year 11 work? Or have already learnt it. I guess it also depends on the person.

^For some subjects, particularly humanities, prelim has no bearing on HSC so you can just pick it up straight from there.

And yes, I have known people to do nothing till yr 12 and get 98+ HOWEVER more of the people who make the 98+ ers have studied consistently in prior years.

Some subjects you will, some subjects don't. Generally - 20% of the Preliminary course can be tested.

English - doesn't but you must know the basics like writing an essay and practice you creative writing...etc.
Maths - does and you must know everything in Year 11 as it is always in the HSC exam itself.
Science - Not sure for Biology but it's best to know the Year 11 content for Physics and Chemistry - definately the skills content.

They cannot directly test you on it unless it is in the HSC syllabus. It doesn't mean that it can make reference to it.

To varying degrees.

Maths - the oft quoted '30% Prelim can be tested.' 100% of Prelim is tested - there's no way you can do Year 12 Maths without knowing the entirety of the Prelim course.

In my own experience:
Economics - its good to revise the Year 11 content - especially supply/demand curves and other diagrams, market failures, etc. Not essential, but it will make things less complex in Year 12

Ancient - Forget Prelim

Studies of Religion - revise the basic sources of ethics for your religious traditions

Business Studies - largely forget prelim. Obviously, remember the business functions, marketing mix, pricing strategies, etc.

English - Forget Prelim.

Pretty much, and for sciences its more about the skills rather than the actual content

For the sciences, it's helpful to know all prelim work, as it is assumed and can be indirectly tested.
