*faints* 40's!!! One of siblings did nothing the entirety of HS and still almost scrapped a 60. Can't believe someone that was let into a top 5 selective got in the 40's! He must have been naturally intelligent to get in the first place. What a throwing away of an opportunity, that not everyone has the opportunity to even live close enough to go to a selective.
It's not like he wasted his knowledge by getting a 40. Maybe he didn't give two craps, he could possibly be extremely smart, but just didn't even bother with the in-school assessments and his external marks had no chance of helping his internal marks.

If they try, they are pretty much guaranteed to get above 80 but if they cbbs or have some family problem that lets them down, then they can get below 80. it all depends how much u studied

Heaps of people bludge there way through high school though - to be honest, it isnt exactly the worst thing you can do (contrary to what everyone would have you believe). I know so many people who bludged through high school, but are doing pretty well for themselves now in terms of uni. The opposite is also true.

Although I can see where you're coming from with it being a wasted opportunity.

If you've got the ability to get into a top end selective school, you could get 80 with extremely little effort (srs). I think the point a lot of people miss is that the only people that get into these schools are very strong academically-> if you just planted a random guy into Ruse, he wouldn't suddenly be a 99 student (it might be slightly easier due to the environment etc. but the school doesn't carry you that far)

Doesn't matter about your cohort if you're top at your school, like coming first/second kind of top...

YES - finally someone pointed it out. Most people who go to selective schools have high natural abilities and are probably more likely to be focused on education. It's like, Real Madrid is a better soccer team than Adelaide United because RM has a massive budget meaning they can buy far better players.

but wouldn't the ruse cohort help the random guy scale up to some level? maybe not 99 but higher than if he went to another school and performed the same.

Not really because the random would be pretty much last in everything. Scaling doesn't help those at the very bottom

does it help him if he's only last in like 1-2 subjects and manage to scrape a below average for the rest?

Possibly, but not much. Remember, the final exams are worth 50% and your school has no impact on them.
