Argh, network help!! (1 Viewer)

Okay, so my dad bought a router with wireless capabilites, a Linksys WRT54G. It has 4 ethernet ports and wireless. It gets it's net connection from the ADSL four-port modem (alcatel)

anyway, the internet works fine (obviously)

but i can no longer share files and printers. i have tried various settings on the XP networking wizard, norton allows sharing, and the windows firewall isnt on.

i can only think that it;s some setting on the Linksys modem that is having an effect, i checked the user guide, nothing on sharing, checked the website, just said use the XP wizard, that doesnt work.

does anybody have ANY ideas on how to get back sharing (i really need the printer mainly, i'm using floppies atm)

P.S. i wont be at my computer for the next 5 hrs

If you go to My Network Places -> View Network Connections -> Right click your network

One of the protocols should be File/Print sharing. Is it enabled ?

does file sharing work through the ethernet ports?

One thing I can suggest, on each computer, right click on the network connection its using. Then properties > then select TCP/IP > Properties > make sure that all the addreses are obtained automatically.

Now click OK and get out of that, then run windows networking wizard, also make sure all computers have SP2 installed (makes wireless networking a breeze).

Also make sure that each computer on the network has the same workgroup (Right click on My Computer, Computer Name tab). If one computer has a different one, it can throw everything off.

Not necessarily, computers assigned different workgroups can still access each other. Check on all computers whether File/Print Network Clients are also running (eg. if you use Novell for network file/printer service, then have Novell client running), this may sound silly but sometimes it's the cause of the problem.

Haha, indeed, although in my experience Windows sometimes gets upset if you don't have them all on the same Workgroup.

Still have to connect with ethernet cable to the modem but heaps easy when my mum wants access to the internet with her laptop. She can stay on the other side of the house at all times

Townie, you end up fixing it? I have a linksys router similar to yours (will get the exact model if need be, but it shouldn't matter) and sometimes the hostname->IP translation takes a while. Try typing in the IP address of the other computer (ie \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\) and seeing if that works.. If not, try simply pinging it (ie Start-> Run. Type "cmd", hit enter, then type "ping <IP ADDRESS>", or "ping <HOSTNAME>".

If the pings don't work you've got some serious problems, most likely your router. If they do work and the \\IP\ address thing doesn't, it's more likely to be a prob with windows.

Oh, we're talking about two XP machines, right?
