I'm debating on whether I should pick ARTS2035 (American Literature: Past and Present) or ARTS2038 (Popular Fictions) for sem 2. If anyone has done these 2 courses, can you tell me what each one is like and if it's easy to pass :)

Thanks!

Hey :)

I've done ARTS2035 (American Literature) and loved it! From my experience it seems pretty easy to pass as long as you do read some of the texts haha and enjoy writing essays :p

The assessments from memory were: (1) 1000 word essay on either a poem or a short story (2) Major essay 2500 words on 2 texts with heaps of good questions to choose from (3) Final essay - originally to be an exam but got changed to a take-home exam so hopefully that stays! It was 2 separate essays so you'd write each essay on one text- again a variety of questions to choose from and they were quite broad/easy!

I think there's only one teacher (Julian) who was very passionate about the subject and knew what he was teaching. Mildly keen for class participation in tutes but there was no mark for it and he wouldn't pick on anyone :) I'm pretty sure lectures were 'compulsory' but I don't recall there was a roll so you could most probably skip them unlike other English subjects!

Overall really enjoyable subject with easy assessments compared to other subjects :D Good luck! Feel free to PM with any other questions :)

I did ARTS2038 with a lecturer who isn't at the School anymore...

It was a lot of reading - it was basically novel after novel after novel, and quite tough in terms of the sheer volume of stuff you were required to get through. But overall, good course.

Thanks for that guys!!
For ARTS2035, did you have to buy most of the books, or were they already given to you? :)

Well the ARTS2035 course outline is already out, and most readings are on moodle, so you don't have to buy the books. I was just asking if they would gradually add links to all the texts.
I know that most english courses require students to buy the books beforehand, however, I was about to buy a book, but the teacher had already given us a link to it online.

waaaaaaaaaaat

when i did english we did it the proper way and bought all the books :p

In my experience, pretty much only additional readings are given out as links. Or poetry and things like that. For a novels course, I'd expect you'd have to fork out some $$$ or whip out your library card
