Sup boyz n girls. i created this thread so that i and anyone who feels the need to ask questions may do so. Hopefully people can participate in answering these questions so we can all benefit in our understanding of Business Studies.

My first question is that is the 4 models (classical, behavourial, political n system and contingency? the reason i ask is because thats all i know n a couple of management because we went through the topics 2 weeks.

I think you mean theories...not models :)

classic scientific theory-based on planning, organising and controlling (POC)
has a structure similar to that of the army
heirachial structure based on the division of labour
pyramid structure
Little or no contact between workers and top management
Classic scientific has long Chain of Command and relatively narrow Span of Control
autocratic leadership style

STRENGTHS:
 Higher worker productivity
 Easy to understand
 Clear accountability
 Clearly understood tasks

WEAKNESSES:
 Wasted worker potential
 Exploited workers
 Autocratic leadership ill-placed in a democratic workplace

behavioural theory-based on leading, motivating and communicating
Looked at factors that affected behaviour in a biz.
Recognised the importance of human behaviour in the success/failure of a biz.
has a flat organisational structure
emphasis on teamwork
participative/democratic leadership style

STRENGTHS:
 Higher morale, increased productivity
 More motivated, interested workers
WEAKNESSES:
 Possible conflict
 Largely ignores planning, organizing & controlling

political theory
Uses power
has a structure of coalitions
management is as negotiation and bargaining
remember ur sources of power 4 this one...
oLEGITIMATE–automatic association with position (E.g. Cops)
oEXPERT–gained by specialist knowledge/skills one wields
oREFERENT–respected/admired characteristics (E.g. Celebrities)
oREWARD–ability to grant rewards (incentive power/managers)
oCOERCIVE–power through fear (threat to job by management)
has a stakeholder view

STRENGTHS:
 Better fits complexity of today
 Able to create alliances & coalitions
 Recognises speed & complexity of change
 More effective tools to achieve goals

WEAKNESSES:
 Focus on just one aspect of management
 Political power can be used unethically
 Coalition of interest groups might use power against the general good
 Decisive leadership less likely.

those 3 are the main ones-CLASSIC SCIENTIFIC, BEHAVIOURAL AND POLITICAL

THE TWO OTHER THEORIES ARE SYSTEMS/CONTINGENCY THEORIES...
Systems & Contingency theories of management concentrate on how management adapt to the changing biz environment.

Systems theories developed as managers viewed their organizations as a system which each separate part interacting with & affecting the other parts

Contingency management attempted to diagnose the nature of the environment & to choose the most appropriate management theory to respond to a particular situation.

hope that helped ur understanding of the management theories :)

Oh sweet. Thx ppl. GOt another question, about the freeze, change n unfreeze. Does freeze mean stop the business n take out the inefficient workers, change employ new workers that will suit the business n unfreeze start the business again?
ok
its UNFREEZE, CHANGE REFREEZE model by lewin
i think ur a bit confused bout it
basically unfreeze is where they take out the existing practices and get the workers ready 4 the change

change is implementing the change

refreezing is locking the new behaviour into the business

hope that helps

" Haggard and Jones Pty Ltd " produces cooking utensils and a variety of can openers for the global market. Selling to Europe, the USA and to the Pacific Region. They operate manufacturing plants in both Australia and China.

In Chian " Haggard and Jones Pty Ltd ", use the classical sciectfic theory in relation to the management of their plant.

In Australia, bacuase of different labour force expectations and a different business environment, they use the "behavioural approach" to management.

OUTLINE BOTH THEORIES AND DISCUSS WHY "HAGGARD AND JONES PTY LTD" USE SPECIFIC THEORIES FOR EACH COUNTRY.

PLEASE HELP!
