I think the point is that there is no need for someone to live beyond their financial means and/or physical needs just for the sake of appearances. In all likelihood that interpretation is wrong, though.Not-That-Bright said:BTW, what's wrong with having a house 3x too big for you? You remind me of the people bitching about GW Bush's inauguration costing 2x their initial donation to the tsunami. The next week there was the oscars, which would of cost alot more than bush's inauguration, the dresses diamons etc etc etc... where was the complaints about that?
Are you going to live in a house that is the bear minimum to live in?
I guess I'd be one of those people who wasn't thrilled with how Bush's inauguration was double the cost of their initial donation. But that doesn't mean I support the bloody extravagence of the oscars and outlandish events like that either.Not-That-Bright said:Well i'm glad you brought up the issue about donating money.
Liberals often like to throw money at situations, like dictators, humanitarian problems etc. Conservatives are more likely to get on the ground and actually do things...
Greed is an aspect of it, but i could argue that the entire concept of social welfare for liberals is the same as u described with donations. They simply want to give them money because it makes them feel better.

It probably doesn't make a profit now, but if VSU was enacted it probably could. Of course I have a feeling many events there would become more expensive for both members and non-members of the union.withoutaface said:Does anyone know if Manning turns over enough to keep it open after VSU?
thankfully i think the usyd union is pretty rich, so my guess is manning will still exist with VSU in placewithoutaface said:Does anyone know if Manning turns over enough to keep it open after VSU?
Per capita we have high emissions.Persephone87 said:Not that I myself particularly agree with the way the Howard government has embarked on things precisely, but its endeavours in the past couple of years has had humanitarian interests. War in Iraq, Tsunami efforts etc.
If you want to say "Oh, why hasnt it signed the Kyoto Protocol?" - it doesnt need to, it already has one of the lowest emissions for a highly industrialised country.
This is just to take a random example. Im sure you can argue many points against, In fact I am sure you will, but this is just some of my observations.
I myself am quite open, but when you say that older people are 'scared' into voting liberal as they get older I find that misleading...the same could be assumed for younger citizens voting labor because it caters more to student welfare etc.
Besides, if you examine Labor and Liberal, they are both basically right wing, just one has a left slant. Sometimes it is very difficult to distinguish the differences, because they both hold similar stances on many areas.
EDIT: I myself like Socialism the most idealistically, but in practice I am conservative.
Asquithian is always right.Not-That-Bright said:After checking out the newspapers etc, at uws... i have discovered something.. I'm REALLY on my own being on the right in university.
Thoughts about this topic?
And of course you wouldn't oppose this either, would you my 'socialist' friend?cherryblossom said:Asquithian is always right.

I consider myself to have taken elements of both sides to create my cynical view of the world
