WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange plans to run for a seat in the Australian Senate, despite being under house arrest in the United Kingdom, the whistleblower group has tweeted.

Wikileaks announced its intentions today, saying the organisation also planned to field a candidate to run against Prime Minister Julia Gillard in her seat of Lalor at the next election.
"We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run," the Wikileaks website tweeted.

As for this it is probably just a ploy to either get attenion on WikiLeaks or Julian Assange's case. Do Senators get diplomatic immunity? (is that even a thing or have I been watching too many movies?)

as per the vienna conventions, diplomatic immunity only applies to diplomatic staff, and is only applicable to a diplomat exercising his official functions

so for instance if you are a diplomat in a foreign land, and you're running a child prostitution operation for funsies, there's no immunity. however, if you drop your trousers and shit in the middle of a restaurant for funsies during a diplomacy-related meeting you're immune from prosecution
