If you're rank 3/15 then you will get the 3rd mark in the HSC exams as your internal mark
So you're internal mark might only be 70% but if everyone does well in the exam and the top marks are 97, 92, 88 and you scored 85 then your internal mark will be 88 and your exam mark is 85

Thats how they prevents unfairness in schools marking easy/hard

^ Although that is an easy explanation, keep in mind apparently the BOS will take into account relative differences between internal ranks (mark wise) so the 3rd internal mark may not be exactly the same as a 3rd exam mark.

Yeah there are people that haven't received them yet and also it's to check that your ranks are right.

So what if you ranked last in every subject and you go to a school ranked around 200th and you get an avg of band 4 for externals?

Then you're screwed.

They can't change the marks. The marks are used to determine the ranks so they're gonna assume that the marks are all correct...there's no way of changing them.
I'm pretty that it's just for clerical errors.
For example, if it it had "5/25" but I actually came 3rd, then they'd recheck the marks and see if i was either 3rd or 5th and just change the ranks.

I doubt you can change marks =\
That'd cause so much confusion and you'd have people trying to scab 1 mark to move up ranks or whatever. It'd be very stupid of them to let you appeal actual MARKS.
