I have come to realise if u flunk ur assignments but ace your hsc exams, you will still get a low UAI, isnt that correct? Any ex-students please explain the procedure to me.

uh yeah
your hsc is made of external and internal assessment.

its to
a. keep smart kids from slacking off all year and then acing the exams, disadvantaging the slow but steady kids who worked consistently all year

and

b. encourage lower level students to work all year. or something

that was the vague explaination ive been given once or twice. i never really questioned it. you do the work and you do well. alot of your in school assessments make your external exams easier. why not make use of it?

maybe in the 60s or 70s?
My friends sister failed her half yearly and yearly (including trials)
but got band 5s and 6s in the hsc and came out with 80 for her UAI.
how is that possible?

Well if the assignments have a weighting and contribute to your overall internal HSC assessment mark, then of course they're important. That can't be said for in-class assignments or anything on the lines of that.

yeah the external exams are worth 50% of the HSC so obviously it weighs much more than assessments.
also i think you answered your own question ;)

Silly thread imo.

Assignments are easy marks and should be treated just as a normal assessment, except sometimes you are able to get feedback.
