yeah i thought it was really hard.
i am in year 10 but because our class accelerates us in maths we had to do the senior paper.
i got stuck in the 4 mark sections!
and didnt get any of the last 10 questions...

yep! :D

Oh, and a question about the "snug" parallelogram, what did you all get for that one?

Re: 2009 AMT Mathematics Competition

Not sure how I went. I think I got ~73 although I may have made silly errors I am unaware of. As for the cut-offs, no idea.

Yeh, nice. For that question i cbf even trying, I despise brute force!!!
lol i used brute force keke

started from 123 and worked my way up although..

but not like 123 then 124..i did use a little bit of intelligence

probably on my 20th attempt i found it..

I had no idea what it was either, and it looked pretty daunting at first sight, but take a look at the examples, is a fraction with the variable x in both the numerator and denominator. , after simplifying is still a fraction with the variable still a power of 1. Following this pattern, will still be a fraction with the variable x in both the numerator and denominator with a power of 1.
Since it asked how many solutions there were to this would result in a quadratic if the denominator is multiplied through. Quadratics have 2 solutions and I think (not completely sure) but the set S means either real or complex solutions, i.e. it doesn't matter if the quadratic doesn't have any real roots. - if this isn't what it means, please elaborate how to distinguish between the answer 1 and 2.
Thus, the answer would be 2, even though I chose 2n in the midst of all the mayhem :p

Re: 2009 AMT Mathematics Competition

for cutoffs, I'm thinking:

below 30 = participation
30 = proficiency
40-55 = credit
55-70 = distinction
70 - 90 = high distinction
90+ = prize

I don't think I went as well as anyone here XD... I worked a fair few out, and was going somewhere with the last question, but I didn't have time -_-

I have no idea what I would have got marks wise... the competition this year was interesting though.

Re: How did people go in the maths comp today?

I was tossing up between 2n and 2^n but went with 2n instead.
i don't think it was either if that was to work for all fn(x) cause f0(x) had 2 solutions to it same with f1(x) and f2(x) though it looked so simple i wasn't sure

Re: How did people go in the maths comp today?

I decided the answer was two solutions. I'm fairly confident with that one, unlike most of the others after Q10.

The parallelogram fitting snugly around the 6 circles intrigued me (my way of covering up that it pissed me off really badly). I was fairly certain I had the exact answer until I looked at the choices. I mean, wtf, I expected 54(2+sqrt(3)). If anyone could walk me through that one, I'd appreciate it.
i had no idea how to work it out so i guessed using approximations, i found the area of the circles and approximated the areas of the answers, 3 of the answers i think were below the area of the circles and 1 was like 4 times the area so there was only one seeminly valid solution

EDIT: same could be used for the overlapping circles in the square one, though 2 turned out to be valid solutions

Oh...looks like Im not the only one who is freaked out about it.
i got HD last year...and i reckon i will be lucky to get a distinction this year by looking at all your discussions :S
