Also, examples with other people are useless, because of the 2nd point. You could say Thierry Henry is a great example of a footballer because he scores goals; I might say he's not because he cheated in the WC qualifiers. That's ok and we can disagree. You must firstly understand that in Islam there is no separation between the state and religion. Apostasy is essentially considered treason to the state. And treason just like everywhere else is punishable by death. Seeing as there is no Islamic state, said punishment is currently irrelevant.

Said slaves were essentially captives from war. And no, punishment for a slave who runs away is not severe beating.

The freeing of slaves is actually encouraged in Islam as a method of phasing the concept of slavery out. Just like alcohol was slowly phased out so was slavery.
