Anyone doing this course? I received an early offer for it this morning through e-mail and also got a 'vip' invitation for their course decision day on the 4th January.

I was just wondering what the course was like in terms of workload and how many facilities and opportunities for cadetships/internships there are and what the advantages of this course are as opposed to just the B Business and Commerce.

I was also wondering what the likelihood of an academic excellence scholarship was, I got an ATAR of 93.25 if that helps.

Thanks for the help, I'm just trying to decide between this and Comm/Eco UNSW because the travel is a big issue as I live out in the Western Suburbs. Prestige is also obviously a very important factor too as I have the marks for UNSW. So I suppose another question I'm asking is whether I'll be disadvantaged in any way by the course.

Do you know what area you want to major in?

If you can keep up with the workload and are decent at maths i'd recommend going to one of the big four. usyd>unsw>maq>uts. However, if you find yourself being offered a scholarship from uws, go there.

In regards to the the abl degree it's exactly the same as business and commerce except you do 4 specialist subjects. Also, if people ask you what uni do you go to? do you feel comfortable saying uws.

If you get over 90 and live in GWS you pretty much instantly get an academic excellence scholarship. The program pretty much sets you up with industry experience, extra-curricular activities, etc unlike the normal degree from UWS.

You'll be disadvantaged instantly for going to UWS due to it's stigma, but yeah the program is designed to offset the disadvantage for a select few.

So if I do this advanced degree do you think i'm on the same level as if I go to UNSW for Comm/Eco? or would it still have the negative connotations associated with UWS?

I'm trying to decide whether the scholarship will be worth going to UWS for. Also the extra curriculars and industry experience would look a lot better on a resume then just going to a higher uni and doing the degree, right?

I'm also interested in OP's questions.

UWS is offering Business and Commerce (ABL)/Law starting from 2011. If the ABL has an okayish industry reputation I would rather stay in UWS to claim my full scholarship instead of tranferring out half way through the degree to graduate at a more prestigious uni.

my advice is that don't even bother with uws business. u'll probably get a scholarship at uws but u'll find it hard getting a job. even if u find a job, ur starting salary will be much less. in the long term u actually ripped urself off. u should be trying for unsw commerce seriously. unsw got a very good reputation for its business facility, whereas uws doesn't really have any reputation. travel might be an issue for u but if u can struggle for 3 years then u'll probably thank yourself for the rest of ur life. plus u can just use the travel time to study. but its all up to u really.

If OP gets the scholarship that gives out industry experience.. I think he/she will be getting a far better deal than he/she would going to Usyd NSW UTS MQ.

if the ABL thing doesnt offer that.. then abandon that option.
If the ABL thing does give that option then please go right head.

wow for someone who graduated this year you sure are smart in terms of what happens out in the real world and how the degrees and universities compare. why havent we listened to you before !

all this starting salary is bullshit. just because you go to syd or new south doesnt automatically qualify an $80 000 starting salary. christ, the HR will look at the type of person you are, so stop talking shit.

im on the abl program - someone said its four specialist subjects in the final year - yeah that's true. we also have networking evenings where we meet CEOs from Deloitte, P&O Cruises, and a bunch of other companies. we had a cocktail night at the opera house where we met adam scott, a motivational speaker who was excellent. you're in a group of thirty people out of 10 000 business students - i definitely think that will count once you graduate.

nothing against the other universities, im sure they're lovely. im just so sick of this elitist attitude coming from people who have been out of school for a whole nine weeks ... good from you. uws is what you make of it - if you dont study, dont concentrate, then yeah, you wont graduate with good grades and your finding a job is probably slightly diminished - same if someone went to unsw. i work in HR full time, and study part time - i deal with graduates all the time. no one cares what uni they came from - we take the people with the best skills all around - technical and soft skills.

I think you'd be lying to yourself if you think that Uni reputation doesnt count in the slightest way.

but yeah, the ABL thing actually sounds like something decent.. i always thought it was some bullshit thing that had some type of shitty managerial flavour to it.. in fact its the opposite.. very useful indeed.

OP, its very similar to the Coop thing UTS has and the other various scholarship programmes the other unis offer. I suggest you go to it.. the networking and various connections you can garner would be very useful indeed.

Something else to consider, have you considered a key program or a potential career path (accounting etc)? An earlier poster mentioned that you would receive industry experience with the ABL program/scholarship. You should look into this before deciding since it may or may not be industry experience relevant to your desired field.

I can say that the extra curricular events available through ABL are quite beneficial providing an excellent opportunity to network with people currently in the industry and with people studying the same course. You probably wouldn’t have access to similar events at UNSW without a scholarship or similar program.

Just ignore Dx_god's post, I don't know how an 09 HSC graduate could possibly have any clue about this discussion.

I would be doing exactly the same as you, John0, majoring in economics and finance. It's tough as I know the unsw course seems to suit what I would want to do more and the uws course seems fairly rigid in terms of majors. But the chance to network and meet people in the industry is a huge plus.

I'm also looking at going on exchange for a while though and unsw provide links to a lot of great universities, but i'll have to think about that later.

To John0, have you found that you have met a lot of people through the program that are relevant to your career path?

How's the maths in your majors Johno?

I've met a few people through the networking opportunities that the ABL program provides, definitely helped when applying for vacationer work with Big4 accounting firms. Mainly due to the fact I had exposure to employees and partners of some firms well before the actual assessment process.

Can you clarify what you mean by rigid majors? If anything a BBC degree is one of the more flexible degrees in terms of key programs, majors and sub majors. I know there is a degree of freedom when picking units within the economics and finance key program, which can allow you to focus on specific areas of finance and economics ie micro or macro. If you dont mind me asking, have you thought about any potential careers once you have graduated?

The maths in the economics and finance key program isnt too difficult provided you have at least completed HSC mathematics (not general). Concepts such as derivatives, integration, statistics are covered in the unit, it makes your life much easier if you are already proficient at these concepts.

Hey I was just wondering where you put UWS in your preferences? Was it first, second?...because I got an invite too but it just says that I'm a VIP guest but nothing about the ABL course. But I got an ATAR of 93.3, so I was maybe thinking that if UWS was a bit lower on your preferences they didn't tell you about the ABL course, though now I'm beginning to become interested in it lol. And also, the Academic Excellence scholarship is automatic right? You didn't have to apply for it?

I think atm UWS is 3rd on my preferences but I still received three early offers from them. I think it's just a general invitation, and you go around the time the faculty you're interested in is on. And yes, the academic excellence scholarship is automatic.
