B Commerce vs B Economics (1 Viewer)

Is there any advantage in doing B Eco over a B Com with a major in Economics?
I'm planning to do honours in eco. It kinda seems like the exact same degree with a different name... any thoughts?

I just recieved a few offers for internal course transfers to Bachelor of Commerce, Economics, Commerce/Economics double and Commerce/Science, and I've having trouble deciding which is best.
I'm after good, versatile career prospects, possibly overseas. I don't want to be an accountant or work in a lab.
I was leaning toward the Comm/Eco double.. does this seem like a good choice? I don't mind spending an extra year at uni if it's going to work in my advantage

If I remember correctly about how the commerce degrees work, the BEco is basically a specialised BComm degree where you must do specific economics subjects to get through the degree.

The BComm degree is a general business degree which allows you to major in whichever business major you want, including the same subjects you would've done in the BEco.

Hopefully someone can confirm this or shoot me down, whichever comes first.

Just a note - if you like the economics side of things, the Comm/Sci degree could be good if you major in econ in the commerce side, and major in a related maths area in the science part. Could really strengthen your economic analytical skills.

I was just wondering though if doing the specialised BEco degree has any advantage of over the BComm with major in eco... because they end up being virtually the same units (maybe one different compulsory unit?).

I'm asking because i was considering accepting the comm/eco double degree, but if i later want to go back to a single, I can only alt-exit into a Bcomm, not a BEco.

b eco: allows you to major in economics or econometrics (i.e. economic statistics)or both. the downside is that you must major in either economics, econometrics or economic history (this last one is based from unsw). however you can major in anything else within the faculty.

b com: does not allow you to gain a major in econometrics or economics. the economics major may fall under a different name such as business economics at unsw. however, econometrics is still specialised within a b eco.

the rules are still applied to com, but now you have the extra allowance to do econometrics and its just an extra year, with 3 majors in 4 years against 2 majors in 3 years.

That's not true, you can still do Econometrics within the Commerce degree, it is simply rebranded as Business Statistics, just like how Economics is called Business Economics.

In answer to the OP question, there probably is no reason to choose B Economics over B Commerce. I was actually in the former and decided to change into Commerce, it does not have any significant bearing on my degree - merely a matter of perceived aesthetics.

Essentially, B Economics can be viewed as a restricted B Commerce degree. They both offer the same courses but as mentioned B Economics forces you to major in an area related to Economics. In addition, if you are looking at UNSW the Economics major itself is more stringent under B Economics because there are a greater number of required courses that you must complete.

I suppose it might be beneficial to complete a B Economics on the basis that it would appear to be more rigorous. However, I doubt most people realise that there are more strict requirements.
