Lecturers don't care about discovery days at all. The only thing the lecturers care about in the discovery day is getting you all out ASAP so they can get back to doing real work (preparing for the semester's classes, or working up at the nuclear reactor). Besides, If you think you'll go to uni and do the shit you did in a discovery day, you're quite the fool. Also, as stated, he is not among the worst in SITACS.
Nobody cares about the high school kiddies, it's true, we hate you all. You sit in the unibar with your bloody cans of coke or fanta and eat all the chips meaning I've finished half my beer before I even get offered gravy or sauce. Bastards.

yeh damn straight

i was at unibar on monday after an exam, and there were these random school kids in uniform playing pool. we walked up and put down a coin (showed them some respect for some reason) but then when we played them, they had a cry that they wanted 2 play some fucked up rules....im sorry but we make the rules bitches!! in the end we just told them to fuck off and they got scared and ran back to one of their teachers. In conclusion, school kids, its bad enough that you inhabit the uni on random days, but geez, go sit in some duckshit on the lawn, dont try to steal our unibar, until your one of unibar's top myspace friends, u cant claim it as ur own :p

Saffioti is a damn awesome lecturer I reckon, he can be a bit of an asshole and set hard assessments but his only problem is his constant Mac preaching. Definately not the worst in SITACS thats for damn sure, that title goes to Eric Rayner.

I gotta say after having done Spring that Neil Gray is possibly the best Computer Science lecturer that I have had so far, very clear, good sense of humour and has really good assignments.

The best Information Technology lecturer and best lecturer overall that I've had so far is Katina Michael, she is awesome, can be a strict marker but is always interested in providing help and getting you through.

And I have discovered that Peter Vial of SECTE loves having 150-200 lecture slides for one lecture which makes them a pain in the arse to summarise.

I feel horrible doing this because I'm sure they're all really nice people... but here goes.

Art theory, VISA121 & VISA122.
They were sharing the workload when I did, I'm sure they still do.

- Jon Cockburn, he does appear to be highly pretentious & has a weird obsession with vogue (ask him about it) but he was extremely helpful with a presentation that I did. This guy can teach you to write like the rest of the articulate/pretentious art people.
- Penny Harris, I liked because she spoke in normal english. Presented some really engaging ideas in a way that didn't make you feel like an idiot.
- Richard Hook, this guy has some amazing works. But I swear he has got to be the most boring lecturer I've ever, ever had. He had to start taking the role because no one was going to class. I can only recommend a laptop, coffee or some sort of drug to keep you awake in these lectures.

VISA101, Photography. I had Martin (Who looks like a pirate) for this subject and it was probably my favourite VISA class I ever took. This is going to sound so arty (which I hate), but from this class I learnt more about the world and society in general.

DESN102, 122, VISA102. Gregor. I find that if you listen to what he says, you get good marks. Really laid back in lectures and classes. He does expect you to do work though, not knock everything together at the last minute.

csci crew. The 'average' lectures won't be getting any mention here though because, well... they're average?
- Gene Awzyio (spelling?) Pretty cool. Gave awesome tests. You have to be an illiterate rhino not to do very well in this class. Doesn't mind a joke, but does talk about her daughter alot.
- Willy Susilo, Jo Abrantes. These two were awesome. Lectures were at horrendous times in the evening, everyone was tired and hungry. But we always had a laugh with these guys out the front. Assignments were nice and easy.
- Koren Ward, quirky. Awesome. Without fail, we got a weeks extension for every assigment. You can email her late at night / early in the morning and it would'nt be weird to get a prompt reply. Assignments were extremely easy. It really feels like she wants you to do well. An honourable mention to Luke S. who is probably the best tutor I've had in csci. Enrol in his tutes and labs, best marker and really explains the conten well.
- Peter Nickolas, he was really helpful. When I had to go for special consideration, he took the time to listen to me and was pretty generous. So maybe he does speak in monotone, he really knows what he is talking about. To make the most of math121 sit out the front and ask questions.
- Murray Elder, I'm not sure if he is still around ... But this guy was weird. He had pretty interactive lectures videos etc. Which made math suck less. But sometimes he had trouble explaining the work to us. He confused himself sometimes, which was amusing at first... His slides were nice and compact. Really tried to make sure we understood. The logic part of the exam was a breeze.
- Chandra Gulati, stat 131. I wish I went to more of his lectures. The ones I did go to were pretty dry. Tactfully, he has a strong accent. He was reading Anne porter's notes and didn't really stop to explain the content. But I heard he was really good one on one. The exam was much easier than I expected. I had real issues with the quality of the tutors though. I dont know his surname, but Avoid Raul... He was pretty terrible to understand, boring and generally not helpful.

Wow, what a nice way to kill some time on a Saturday night. To anyone looking for a job... Don't. :mad1: If you want spectacular grades and a fabulous social life. It ruins everything.

Spring Session 2006 report:
CSCI213: Java Programming and Object Oriented Design
Associate Professor Neil Gray - bad
Others said he is awesome but my experience with him is the otherwise.
This dude is so up himself. His lecturing speed is ridiculously fast, and doesn't really explain much, covers too much in one subject. What really makes him bad is that I emailed 3 times on questions of assignment 2 - no reply. The next day I went to the lecture he said 'A student emailed me about the assignment, but I didn't bother to reply, the questions are too easy'. Those easy questions took me 12 hours and still couldn't solve it. Nevertheless I dropped the subject the week after.

CSCI213 is good if you knew how to program in Java already. Neil Gray has a serious attitude problem.

CSCI205: Development Methods and Tools
Aneesh Krishna - bad
OK a confession here: I didn't even go to one of his lecture. More details below.
However, as a subject coordinator, I had trouble with the group project therefore I went to him.

I worked in a group of 4. Throughout the project 2 other group members were very uncooperative. One of them went back to China 2 weeks prior the project was due because of family emergency. I said to him that's fine just do the work while you are over China, he could still use pen and paper right? He came back on the 2 days just before the project was due: nada and get this, he did nothing before he left, so it was a big zero from him.

Then the other guy went on hiking as a guide during stuvac for 10 days, again before he left, he did nothing. He came back 3 days before it was due.

As for the 3rd member, he was only slightly better than the other 2, I did the majority of the work.

I told Aneesh everything about the group and he assured me when they marked the assignment, our marks will reflect upon our contribution. When I got the assignment back, our marks were the SAME. I put down our workloads: 40%, 20%, 15%, 15%. Aneesh's reason: There is no evidence to support they did less work than me. What a load of shit! From this point onwards, I lost all my respect to SITACS staff. Shit department filled with shit staff.

Oh not to mention the useless exam revision lectures. What was in the revision notes was completely different to what was in the exam. Moron.

Aniruddha Dasgupta - bad
I had this guy in CSCI205 for the first 8 weeks. At the beginning 30 people went to his lecture. By the time I stopped going, only 15 left. All he did was just read straight off from the notes. The mid term was a joke, 25 multiple choice questions, the worst questions I've seen, they weren't hard, its just the wordings were bad. Negative marking applied initially, but at the end, Aneesh got rid of it, average was 10/20. In week 8, only 5 people went to his Thursday afternoon lecture (80 people were enrolled in the subject)

I also had him in CSCI222, same crap, I stopped going to the lectures in week 4.

CSCI222: Systems Developments
John Fulcher - bad
Again I didn't go any of his lecture. HOWEVER this subject was taught by 2 people. Our group had some questions on the lecture notes (Anirudda's part). Since Anirudda wasn't available that day, we went to Fulcher. His answer was: Oh that's not part of my course, I don't know anything about it, don't ask me, ask Anirudda." Mind you he is Professor and the subject coordinator.

Also what's with the announcements are made during lectures only but not on WebCT? Assignment 3 demonstration wasn't mentioned in the spec at all. But Fulcher decided it was on the week after in the lab. Even the tutor didn't know about it.

STAT131: Exploring variation and uncertainty in Data
Chandra Gulati - good
Like Jerome said his lectures were crap, very very boring, hopeless.
BUT he was excellent in replying emails. He answered all my questions and made sure I actually understood it. He pointed out where to look in the lab manual and sometimes even provided the answers! He really wants everyone to do well, the best lecturer I've met this year!

I agree with the quality of the tutor. I had Raed and his accent was difficult to understand and not helpful. Once we had Loai, he was worse. He talked in a very soft voice and the accent was also difficult to understand, not sure about Clive.

For the record I got 67 in CSCI205; 83 in CSCI222 and 80 in STAT131.

Autumn Session 2006
CSCI124: Applied Programming
Aneesh Krishna - V-Bad

I am not kidding - this guy can't program for peanuts! He was definitely the worst and most incompetent lecturer I have come across at uni. He obiously knows very little C++ which is what this subject was supposed to be teaching us. But it wasn't a complete distaster. For the first half of this subject I had Koren Ward and she was good and so were the tutors. But when Aneesh took over, most of the C++ code he had in his lecture notes had errors in it and crashed when run. Also, the code he handed out to us, as part of the exercise, was full of errors too. Here is an example of what was in Exercise 3:

stack = new STACK[sizeof(STACK)];

This was supposed to allocate one stack implemented as a linked list. It obviously allocates a whole "stack" of them, if you excuse the pun - lol! It is also just plain stupid! So was much of his other code. When we asked him about the mistakes in his code he seemed to not even understand we meant when we tried to tell him his code had errors and memory leaks.

Mind you, the C++ code that he gave us was as leaky as a seive. What a hopeless case at C++. We just gave up on asking him anything. He obviously knows very little on C++. But the tutors and the other lecturer - Koren were ok. I can't complain there. Luke McAven was very good too in CSCI204.

All Aneesh ever did in his lectures was just read the poorly prepared notes. What a waste of time that was! The notes were full of errors too! I stopped attending his lectures but did attend a few times toward the end of the session. I'm not joking, only about five students were turning up for the lectures by then out of a class of about 80.

I just can't understand how someone so hopless in C++ and incompetent at lecturing can get a job as a computer science lecturer.

lol that was the same case as CSCI205, started off with around 80, but at the end only 3 turned up. But that was when Aniruddha Dasgupta lectured, he was bad.

When I did CSCI124, it was still called Object Programming and I had Koren Ward and Peter Castle, Koren was a lot better than Peter.

I think that's the only requirement to be a SITACS lecturer.

Ok

This semester, which lecturers do you have that you wish you didn't? You might need to take a core subject, or that subject is the only one that fits in with your timetable?

For two of my subjects, the lecturers are in the green (Neil Grey and DFS), for the other two I don't know, never had them. I'll comment on them as I have them.

But if you have lecturers you don't want this semester (or lecturers you're glad you have), please bitch/gloat about it here. :D

Bad lecturers eh? How about, half of all the lecturers in commerce. The ones who can't speak English so you don't know what the hell they are going on about. "Student centered learning" is what the UOW refers to it as. What a crock of shit. This is costing me 1000s of dollars and the lecturers can't even speak the language! What a joke. This is the biggest adjustment I've had to make from high school - the fact that the teachers don't actually have any qualifications in teaching....and some can't even speak English to a 3rd grade level.
