yea this is a really basic question that i forgot and i can't find in my notes
find the locus of p(x,y) which moves so that its distance from 1,0 is a third of the distance from x=9

make the focus 1,0 and the directices is x=9
use the distance formula(or PS=ePM) to find the distance of the point to the focus and the distance from the point to the line is |9-x|...
