i wasn't aware of this. from the handbook it says

at least 96 units of credit comprising a major of at least 48 units of credit in an approved disciplinary stream and a minor of 24 units of credit of approved session courses of which no more than 12 units may be level 1 courses; prescribed level 1 introductory courses; or suitable electives to make up the full 96 UOC; and
i thought it applied to all specialisations but sorry I'm not sure on this because I don't do commerce yet and haven't even properly decided on my majors etc.

Hmm...I might be mistaken.
Hopefully it is possible to do one major and one minor. Though the workload would be considerably greater, it'd be even better if you could do two majors.

Btw. if you do Com/En and you decide to drop Eng, can you still do two Commerce majors or do you have to stick to one major and one minor? The little sentence at the bottom of the Com/Eng page didn't really explain it all that well...or maybe I just didn't understand it :p

I think the double major option is available only to people doing comm/law, everything else is major/minor i think.

If you do decided to drop eng then i'm pretty sure you can switch from a major/minor to a double major relatively easily as long as you don't change specialisations. I guess it'll depend on how far into the double degree you decide to drop...but I don't see why not.

Also you should note, your pretty limited in specialisation areas for commerce

your only given a few choices

* accounting
* economics
* finance
* business statistics

i guess so... i know someone who isn't following the preferred program structure who is already mixing commerce with engineering

i think unlike usyd, you can do commerce or engineering whenever you want. I hear in usyd your forced to do commerce WITH engineering at the same time (i could be wrong but this is what my friend at usyd said).

more info here
Depends on what your prereqs for specific subjects are or whatever, but I'm doing BE/BSc and I have a lot of room to move as to when I do my science subs and engineering subjects, I have a friend who is in the same degree and did 90% of his science degree in the first 2 years and is now taking the first year engineering courses.

Well, I'd definitely do Finance...and I guess the "safe" option would be Accounting. But if I were to do a BCom on it's own, I wouldn't mind doing Finance/Int'l Business or Finance/Management - it's a pity they don't offer those in combination with Eng since a lot of engineers do end up in management and given the trend towards globalisation, int'l business would also be important nowadays.

Do Actuarial Studies/Seng. That is probably the best combo.

Actuarial Studies would be good, but it's kind of boring and laborious (from what I've heard). Ultimately I'd like to work in an investment back, hopefully in a managerial position - for that, it sounds like Law would be a better option but I'm not wholly interested in Law.

Hm... Then just do Commerce then later do a MBA

Actuarial is actually quite interesting - lots of stuff from different areas like finance, economics, accounting, etc. Going to investment banking is a long shot - its mostly for the elite commerce/law students or co-op students.

How about elite Commerce students? (without a Law degree or a co-op scholarship). I'd like to work at a merchant bank once I graduate...though it's difficult for new graduates to get in, that's what I'm aiming for. But as gman03 said, maybe I am better of just doing a BCom and an MBA...right now, I'm just in indecision about what the best option for me is.

Postgrad degrees are way off in the future. You have barely finished high school. An MBA is a costly investment in your education; it would be wiser to secure a job where the course is subsidised by your employer. Anyways, there are many postgrad degrees that you can do after finishing your undergraduate business degree apart from an MBA. For example, there are Masters degrees from the Securities Institute of Australia, CFA, etc.

Normal commerce students don't seem to rate highly for IB (but they do well at Audit).

I think I'll try and veer away from Audit or Accounting in general...only because of what I've learnt from people I know. I think Finance offers a more promising career and people who do Audit seem to get stuck there.

you'll find uni physics is much closer to year 8 9 10 11 physics than it is to year 12

if you do something like chemical engineering you do much easier physics, (i think they do fundamentals?)

also at UNSW you're allowed to take different subjects of your BE at the same time with your BCom degree, and do them at the 'same time'.. but it really fucks things around. The way it's set out for you by the uni is their way so it is obviously the best, there is no need to change it at all.

can any1 fill me in?

QMA/QMB is just maths isn't it?
I had a look through my sister's old QMA book and it was all 2U-MX2 maths.

Is there anybody here doing the new combined BCom/BEn degree at UNSW? If you choose the course, do you have to take up Software Engineering or can you take on another discipline instead? Is it necessary to have a knowledge of Physics for all engineering courses? If not, which are the disciplines that require a Physics background? Looking at the UNSW website, it seems that only Computer, Telecomm and Electrical Engineering have physics as assumed knowledge...but what about Mechatronic and Mechanical...wouldn't they also require physics?
Take a look at this page if u haven't already...

i do seng/commerce and i can explain why we get a major and minor whereas the other eng/comms get a single major.

coz in a normal seng program, you're forced to do all these infs subjects anyway, which belong to commerce faculty. so now that u're doing seng/commerce, they might aswell reward you for doing those subjects, hence you get a minor in info sys.

Your misinforming the people d00d. I will clarify your slightly mis-guided post.

Eng/Com is 5.5years
Eng(Software)/Com is 5years

As another person has posted this earlier, in the handbook, this quote concerns the Eng/Com 5.5yr combination
at least 96 units of credit comprising a major of at least 48 units of credit in an approved disciplinary stream and a minor of 24 units of credit of approved session courses of which no more than 12 units may be level 1 courses; prescribed level 1 introductory courses; or suitable electives to make up the full 96 UOC;

Now if you read that properly, basically
* You can do a minor in the general Eng/Com OR you can just fill up the remaining credit points with Commerce electives

That quoted text above, doesn't say you only have a major. It says you can choose to either have a major OR have a major/minor as long as you do what is outlined.

The reason the handbook lists a award for major and not major/minor is because not all people will do a minor in the Eng/Com degree. By listing one thing there, it serves not to confuse others. (I guess it unintenionally did the reverse :p )

So summing up, you can do a major/minor in the 5.5yr Eng/Com degree. Just follow the rules outlined (a minor being 24uoc of approved courses in some commerce specialisation)

Also, with reference to Eng(Software)/Com, its 5 years, due to the shared interest of infs courses between the Software and Commerce degree. However the courses of infs you do in Software only amount to 15uoc. So you have to use 9uoc of your software electives to fulfill the award for the minor in infs. This is the reason why seng/com aren't stuck for at uni for an additional semester.

So d00d, remember when your doing your seng/com degree, that the infs numbers must be >=24uoc or you might find yourself stuck at uni for a tad longer than expected.

Cheers

i think you've got it wrong here... the infs courses you do in seng are 21uoc... meaning you only need another 3uoc of infs electives to get the minor...

Actually, you just assumed one would take INFS2607 in your count, as where I took it as optional, as it is optional now. In a seng program you can take INFS2607 or COMP3331.

Therefore (counting mandatory infs subjects to be taken)
INFS1603 = 6uoc
INFS1611 = 3uoc
INFS2603 = 6uoc

6+3+6 = 15 uoc, subtracted from 24uoc, leaves 9uoc.

Cheers
