For those of you considering to do a BComm/LLB double degree or those currently doing one, what are the types of career paths you are looking at? What are the prospects of your chosen career path?

Another general question: Why is BComm/LLB so popular amongst school leavers with cut offs at some unis being as high as 99.45 (Uni Melb)?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Because it gives you incredibly extensive career prospects.

Most careers obviously involve business to some extent, and a BCom gives you an excellent foundation in business and commerce. Likewise, law is relevant to pretty much every aspect of human activity and is very attractive to employers and useful for business. Doing them both basically gives you the widest career prospects possible out of any of the degrees that one can choose these days.

While useful, obviously if you are interested in a specialised substantive practice such as medicine or engineering, then obviously you'd want to gain a degree in those areas. But other than the sciences, I would suggest to you that you can't really go wrong with a BCom/LLB, in terms of career opportunity.

I am doing a BA/LLB because I am far more interested in particular Arts subjects. Obviously you should choose what interests you as well. (Mind you I might like to do a BCom on top of my BA/LLB if (a) I had infinite time; and (b) I had infinite funds.)

Thanks for the reply, Moonlight. Well it seems almost certain I will be doing Comm/Law next year at UoM. I chose it as I am still unsure of a future career, but I have answered "Yes" to some of the questions you said we should ask ourselves in the "Law FAQ" thread and I think I will enjoy Law. Commerce is fairly broad as well, so in the coming months I hope to gain some insight into which area I would most likely prefer to take up in a future job.

What year of your studies are you in Moonlight?

On a side note, I was wondering why many high achieving VCE graduates choose UoM over Monash and whether the two Melbourne schools' reputations are parallel to their counterparts in Sydney (USyd & UNSW), because from memory, the schools cutoffs are quite similar.

Congrats, the University of Melbourne is a good uni

Their law building is fairly recent too, I think. They appear to have a highly sophisticated moot court

What year of your studies are you in Moonlight?

2007 will be my 5th and final year.

On the topic of flashy moot courts, QUT seems to have embraced the 'next generation' as well. I'll be happy to see one of these things in NSW, let alone at UOW.

The cleary-in for UoM was 99.45 and 99.00 for Monash in 2006. Both have very good reputations and excellent courses, but Melbourne does have a much better national and international reputation than Monash. I chose UoM over Monash as I really liked the facilities at UoM. Nice law building with a legal resource centre over three floors sure sounds good. Also a BIG factor for me was location. Located in the city, the UoM campus is far more attractive than Monash's Clayton campus which is right out of the way.

The mooting facilities are great! I like the idea of this "mooting". I saw a video (University of HK website) of an international moot and it looked like a lot of fun. Besides working hard there seems to be a lot of things outside of study that seems attractive too. The Melbourne Uni Law Student Society seems very interesting. (Law camp sounds fun...http://www.lss.unimelb.edu.au/activities_lawcamp.cfm)

Fifth and final year Moonlight, congratulations and good luck. You are getting to the business end of your studies. Hows the job hunting going?

It seems different from the UNSW/USyd rivalry. where the former is clear cut (Melb> Monash) (demand and reputation wise I mean), the latter seems to be the subject of heated debate.

I always thought USyd>UNSW. Apparently not. For things like Commerce it seems UNSW is preferred.

Really? I've always thought and have been told that USyd>UNSW for things like Commerce while UNSW maybe greater than USyd for things like International Studies or Languages. :consfused:

I'm not sure what you mean by "things like commerce".

In terms of each university's strengths reputation-wise, both are great universities but the following may be said:

• UNSW is more highly regarded when it comes to Computer Science.

(are u given you commerce degree at the end of year 3 and the law degree at the end of year 5?)

No I think you just get one at the end of the five years where you receive both at the same time.

I could be wrong, the guy was slightly boring and I wasn't paying all that much attention.

I could be wrong, the guy was slightly boring and I wasn't paying all that much attention.

Not 100% sure what you mean there but you can definitely take a year "off" to do Honours in between 3rd and 4th year law.

On a side note, what career options are you looking to pursue Moonlight?

My goal is to become a barrister, practicing in commercial and possibly administrative law.

(Although I'm aiming to work in a commercial law firm for a few years first)
