I dont need to chase a job, i ll be rich in my chosen field no matter what, but i pick it because i enjoy it thus i am more likely to excel at it.

lol sounds obviously like a troll but i'll bite.

firstly, if u think med is hard to get into wait until u try to get into a surgical specialty. it's this reason why so many ppl change their minds throughout med school on what specialty they want to do. most ppl at the start of med school are like "OMG BRAIN SURGEON OMG OPHTHALMOLOGIST OMG RADIOLOGIST" before they learn that these specialties are nigh impossible to get into.

secondly, med sucks for money. go commerce/dent if u want to earn money. w/ med ur only rich when ur like 50. until then ur just getting abused/bossed around by seniors on minimal pay.

lastly female surgeons are extremely rare. not sure nor do i care about the exact reason, but presumably it's something about having kids.

That is correct. When you are an intern; you are expected to work ridiculous hours (roughly 60 a week) plus you can be called in at anytime of the day/night and hence makes it incredibly difficult to look after children. The other thing is that when surgeons become fully specialised in their field and have some control over the hours they work, they're usually around their mid-late 30s and at this age it is becoming a bit late to start raising a family.

So surgeons get paid very well so I'm now trying very hard (umat prep papers every two days) to try and get into UNSW medicine. Now, people have told me that I shouldn't because I don't have the right intentions, but I just want to become rich. I go to NSG and I'm doing quite well, so I'm capable of getting into the course.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Whilst becoming a surgeon may pay a lot why not go into something like investment banking or actuary. Less work, more pay.

Who cares if you don't like them... it doesn't seem like you're going into medicine for the right intentions (have an actual interest) anyway.

You say you want to get into UNSW medicine. Is there any particular reason why you are only limiting yourself to one university of the many available in Australia that offer medicine.

You will be undertaking at least 7-8 yars of study minimum before you start undertaking your training for a specialty. Whilst it is good that you have some idea of what you may want to do, you have no interest by the looks of it. Surgery has many disadvantages such as very long working hours and medicine is a course which requires constant and on-going learning (for the rest of your life).

It seems to me that you just started the thread for the sake of getting a reputation out there for yourself. For those who are actually serious and interested in a career in medicine I hope you can take something positive out of this.
