God I am so crap with word limits...

Anyway, what's a suitable amount of words for an average English HSC Belonging essay.

As a rough guide, 800-1200. Anything more you probably won't get down, anything less isn't really substantial enough to get full marks

It depends on how fast you write though and the length of your other sections. I personally managed to get over 1400 words down for the belonging essay and still wrote more than 1000 for the creative and a substantial amount for the unseen texts. But definitely, don't try to cram too much into your response if you don't think you'll be able to write it in the exam.

I spent a little too much time on the comprehension section for my liking, I spent the full 40 minutes - but did end up with 15/15 as my raw mark.

I spent 35 minutes on my creative and got 13/15. And then spent the remaining time on my essay, and had to whip up a few crafty bits along the way (and was disappointed with my essay) but still got 12/15.
In terms of length, my creative writing was approximately 900-950 words, and my essay would have been 1000-1050.
