Benchmarking isnt only for video cards.
In a traditional sense a benchmark is a physical object of mark, as used in surveying land, that is placed at a known elevation and location and is then used as a point of reference to detertmine the elevation of other nearby locations. In computing, a benchmark has a smilar symbolic meaning - it serves as a point of reference against which the performance of a particular piece of hardware is tested.

Benchmarking can take on lots of different forms. They might take on a real-world value usch as the time is takes to perform a particular operation, such as, lets say, opening 10 instances of microsoft word and timing how long it takes. Or possibly benchmarking can be an abstract figure, like the MIPS of a cpu.

Heaps of apps can be used.

Stuff from Futuremark is good.

SiSoft Sandra
3D Mark, PC Mark.

Have a read of a couple of reviews and you'll find that Q3 tests are usually run with a few others, eg XviD and other media compression algorithms.

Let me know if you get over 22,000 3D Marks :p

My AMD 550 got a 630 Benchmark when it was left on for a whole day.

It had like 2fps when running it :/

No, but it's damn close.

i doubt it, you will need a severely overclocked system to get that
Severely overclocked you say?

You mean upping the frequency on RAM, video card, and CPU?
Something like a CPU with a 3.6GHz overclocking ceiling?

Running at 3.5GHz stable?
With HyperThreading (HT) technology?
What about purchasing some PC4000 RAM?
Or Having dual-channel memory, 4x512MB (maxed out) banks?

Yeah... it's doubtful for 22,000 on 3DMark2001 - too bad I don't play any games (LOTR:ROTK + LOTR:WOTR are some games I would like to try, but haven't got around to doing that yet).

acctually that wasn't my TNT2, it was my GF4MX440
i don't think TNT2 can run '03
I have a 4 year old TNT2, 32MB card lying in another machine. From memory I believe it ran both 3DMark2001 and 2003.
