ill have to say that my favourite is:

Dog Day Afternoon
honourable mentions go to a clockwork orange, the godfather, one flew over the cuckoos nest and cabaret.

Virtually impossible to choose from Hollywood's golden age. I'd say..

The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, Network, Manhattan... I'd rate them all at around the same level.

The Shining came out in 1980. Buuuuut I'll let that one slide. ;)

Sliding Doors? the 1998 film with Gwyneth Paltrow?

Oh I simply must add Rocky Horror. The greatest and campiest cult film of all

I can't believe no one has mentioned Star Wars yet.. that's really quite impressive.

an obscure one, but for my money it's o lucky man!, which is also my tentative favorite film of all time. it expresses the malaise of the times in a really universal way; i can totally relate to it more than any film. stars malcolm mcdowell, the 70's counter-culture poster boy.

runners-up include badlands, manhattan, bring me the head of alfredo garcia, a woman under the influence, and taxi driver.

great decade, although there didn't seem to be a lot of range in the great films. mostly about depression, angst, nihilism, violence etc.
