santamaria was a member of the democratic labour party, primarily involved in separating the threat of communism from the labour party.
post ww2, there wqas a heightened ferar of communism, with which areas of the albour party were associated. communists and catholics alike argued for social justice instead of social welfare, with santamaria seeing a change in the economic system as being essential for social change.
communism upheld the same view and hence it seemed as if santamaria and communism were fighting the same fight. since communism is an atheistic political viewpoint, santamaria found it necessary to disassociate with the communist party by disowning them and attacking their views through trade unions.
through creating disputes in trade unions in regard to communists, santamaria played a large part in downplaying the communist threat and disassoiating the catholic church from communism.
