How are the readings going for all of you? Have you read and summarised through all of them? Our class aren't even halfway through cause we've been slacking off a lot.

we did our book of readings in a term and now nearly finished unit of study. doesnt mean i know any of it but

yeah we're nearly finished the case study. Why? does the case study have to be relevant to the readings?

Our classes are finished our study of the book of readings. we didnt do all of them in class. roughly 1/4 we were required to do ourselves at home. However, every1 ended up having read them really early because our teacher made us do exercises where we grouped them all together under different headings (ie. in dealing with different historical issues, such as artistic vs scientific). if u havent tried this approach, i strongly recommend it, it really helped me and is great for study.

We didnt even really go through the readings at all. We did one lesson on them. Our teacher just gave them to us and said "read these over the next week". We all like just read a few pages and then discussed them next week. After that we went straight to our case study and no one (including the teacher) has ever mentioned those readings again. Beats me why you're all so stressed about them. Lol. I thought they were an introduction to the topic, not really assessable. You'r being assessed on historiography and there's plenty of better things u can read for that.

Yeah the same with us (sort of). Over a few weeks the teacher set us about three each week to read and summarise - the main ones eg. Jenkins, Evans, Reynolds, etc. We had a bit of discussion in class but no real study of them as such. We did the rest of the topic as a series of debates between historians (eg. Windschuttle vs. Reynolds, Elton vs. Carr, etc.)

I think the real point of the Book of Readings is just so you can extract quotes to use in the first question of the HSC exam.

Yeah, I thought so. That makes us feel a whole lot better, haha. I don't see the point in stressing too much over those readings, I have a friend that did the course last year and got 96 for History Extension and he didn't even read them. All we did was read a few in class, and got summaries of the important points in the first 4-5 readings. We too did the Reynolds vs Windschuttle debates and stuff to familiarize us with them, so I don't think we're 'that' behind. Seriously, too much stress ain't good for ya, especially if it's only over one subject - a ONE unit subject.

Yeah in our small class (only two people) we only had a cursory examination of the book of readings and we've spent most of the time on our case study. Can anyone reccomend which are the best readings to have a look at and summarise?

I'd pick stuff which gives varying opinions ie. things on either side of arguments. eg Elton vs. Carr or Reynolds vs. Windscuttle. I'd also recommend Evans, only because that gives you a good breakdown on the history of history and introduces many historians in one article.

the readings (although you really should have read them) are really necessary for the historiography question. if your class has a historiography text (we have john warren's text) look at that its got much better material & a more thorough run down on the historians.

we did most of our case study- when we go back we do one more person and then go over the readings we each had to choose one to analyse and share with the class -there were 5 of us then and + the ones with our teacher
