It is that time of year again! This year, Bored of Studies will be holding trial exams for:

• Mathematics Extension 1
• Mathematics Extension 2
• Chemistry

These are aimed at students seeking a challenging paper that will push their limits and test how well they really know their stuff. The exams have been designed by our team maintaining a high standard of challenging questions, whilst still remaining within the bounds of the HSC syllabus.

They will interest you, challenge you and show you different ways of thinking for certain topics (which will be very handy for the actual HSC exam!). Students who have taken these trial exams in previous years can attest to this.

Note: Students who may be worried about losing motivation (due to results) are reminded that this is NOT intended to be an accurate reflection of the difficulty of the HSC. The questions are made to be as closely styled as possible to the HSC exams (see previous papers), but this will be one of your last chances to practice a full exam as close to HSC conditions as possible.


Different BoS trial format this year
This year we will be running the BoS trial exams online. A team of markers will then mark the responses and we will post the (anonymised) results on this forum in due course, along with sample solutions. Whilst we would have loved to have had an in-person event, the decision has been made to go with an online format this year for the following reasons:
• Current NSW Health protocols are that any positive COVID-19 case must isolate for 14 days regardless of vaccination status. Given that there are still hundreds of cases circulating in the community, the last thing we want is for this event to create a transmission risk and force students into quarantine, subsequently missing their HSC exams.
• Any large gathering event will likely require strict rules in vaccination status and masking. This, along with the uncertainty of the government constantly changing rules at short notice, makes it challenging and risky for any venue to host and enforce the rules.

Of course, we recognise that actual supervised exam conditions cannot be perfectly enforced with this format. The timed nature of the exam and the application-centric nature of the questions will help mitigate some of this. However, we strongly advise that you sit this in as close to exam conditions as possible at home, to get the maximum benefit for your HSC studies. If you are going to be cheating yourself to stroke your ego and get a false sense of security, then note that it is to your own detriment when it comes to the preparing for the real HSC exam (given this is a practice exam and doesn’t actually count to any official assessment marks).

An outline of how this will work:

1. Students who register will be invited into a restricted forum on this website specifically set up for the BoS trials. The forum to submit responses will function in a similar way to Contact Moderators, in that it is private for the individual student but viewable by markers. More specific instructions will be provided to the participants closer to the exam day.
2. The exam paper will be released to participants at a certain time (see below). They will be given a time limit to complete the paper and attach photos/scans of their responses as a series of PDF files into a thread. A 20 minute leeway will be given to allow time for upload.
3. When time is up, all submission threads will be locked and the submission will be taken as final for marking. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Time of exams
The times are indicative of 10 minutes reading time, 3 hours writing time (2 hours for Maths Ext1) and 20 minutes upload time (15 minutes for Maths Ext1). Please make sure you are online on Bored of Studies at least 10 minutes prior to the designated start time.

Target audience
It is highly recommended that students attempting the papers are around (or at least aiming for) the band 6 or band E4 range. The exams will very thoroughly examine your understanding of different topics, but more importantly your ability to apply this to solving problems under exam conditions.

What you need
• A Bored of Studies account - if you are not yet a member (or would like to sign up some friends) you can sign up for free by clicking on the ‘Register’ button on the top right corner of the page
• An appropriate physical environment to do the exam, ideally a quiet room with minimal disturbance on the exam day
• Your own blank writing paper
• A phone or scanner to take photos/scans of responses
• A working computer/laptop with stable internet connection and the ability to paste photos in a Word file and convert them to a PDF
• The usual materials allowed for the HSC exams, including pen and calculator
• A printer at home is preferred (particularly for Chemistry where it is more convenient to print the paper and write/graph on the spaces in section II) but not mandatory

Cost
Given the online delivery of the exams, this will be a free event.

Yeah it is a select number of people. Moderators are often involved in it as some of us are completing or have completed a degree in that area so we are able to write a more difficult paper using that in-depth university knowledge.

I wrote and marked the 2020 Chemistry BOS Trial last year by myself with some reviewing help from Trebla.

This year however I did not write the paper due to it being my Honours thesis year for my undergrad degree. Because of that I have been very busy with working on my honours project and thesis which is being submitted within the next 2 weeks.

@CM_Tutor wrote the paper himself this year. I helped out a little bit with reviewing the paper and providing some suggestions or clarification to double check that the questions being asked were within the scope of the syllabus, but other than it is all his own work.

Next year however I will be back and possibly working with CM_Tutor to write the paper.

Assuming that the 2021 exams are successful, I'll be happy to collaborate with @jazz519 on a chemistry paper for next year. I'll be interested (as will jazz, I anticipate) to hear feedback on the papers from 2020 and 2021, which questions were the most challenging, what was learned from doing them, etc, so we can aim to keep the papers at the extra-challenging level.

As @Trebla has said, these exams are meant as a challenge, but also to illustrate how the most difficult questions at the end of a paper can be tailored to different topics in the syllabus. As such, they are meant to be a useful resource for HSC preparation even outside of exam conditions. No HSC (or even trial) exam is likely to put as many difficult questions together under exam conditions and time pressure. The papers and solutions will be publicly available for those BoS participants who don't take on the challenge of trying the exams under exam conditions. The total number of candidates who can take the exams under exam conditions is limited - we can't mark hundreds of exams in a limited timeframe, after all!

I cannot speak for anyone else involved in writing BoS exams, but I hope that the chemistry exam offers a useful learning experience - pointing to areas of syllabus content that would benefit from further revision as well as areas where your understanding is strong. I suspect that the same is true for the other exams.

Writing these exams, the model answers, and marking take a considerable amount of time. I hope that there is a good response to the opportunity being provided despite the unusually late timing. Trebla has put in a lot of work to make the BoS exams possible in an online format and the investment in time that is being given to the community is substantial. Please, show us that this is a worthwhile activity and is appreciated.

The papers and solutions will be publicly available for those BoS participants who don't take on the challenge of trying the exams under exam conditions. The total number of candidates who can take the exams under exam conditions is limited - we can't mark hundreds of exams in a limited timeframe, after all!

For students registered in Mathematics Extension 2
Just a reminder that if you are a confirmed registration for Mathematics Extension 2 you should already now have access to the BoS Trials forum to submit your responses. This is on the Forums page when you scroll to the bottom. Feel free to familiarise yourself with the instructions in advance of the exam time. If you are a confirmed registration for Mathematics Extension 2 and currently cannot see the BoS Trials forum, please let me know asap!

For students registered in Mathematics Extension 1
For those doing Mathematics Extension 1 (but not Mathematics Extension 2), you should be able to access the BoS Trials forum by around 1.30pm to familiarise yourself with the instructions and structure. This is on the Forums page when you scroll to the bottom. If you are unable to see the BoS Trials forum by 2pm, please let me know asap!
