Well after a few weeks of policy announcements this was certainly not needed. He got drunk. His future now under a cloud......funny how political fortunes can change in a mere few hours....

John Brogden's future as state Opposition Leader is under a cloud after he was forced to apologise for an alcohol-fuelled night during which he pinched one journalist's bottom, propositioned another and referred to Bob Carr's wife as a "mail-order bride".

A senior Liberal MP told the Herald last night that Mr Brogden should resign. "It is a full-blown crisis. I think it is terrible. I think it is that serious, and he knows it and that is why his statement is out there."

Mr Carr said Mr Brogden should resign this week.

"Mr Brogden is totally unfit to lead any political party," he told the Herald. "[He] has given vent to sheer, unadulterated racism - in a state where one in four citizens was born overseas."

Opposition leader John Brogden has apologised for calling the wife of former NSW premier Bob Carr a "mail-order bride".

Mr Brogden made the comment about Malaysian-born Helena Carr while drinking at a function hosted by the Australian Hotels Association on August 6, according to newspaper reports.

"It was offensive and unnecessary and I apologise for that," Mr Brogden said today.

Mr Brogden said he also regretted behaving inappropriately towards two women during the night, including pinching one guest on the bottom and asking another if she was available.

"I apologise for my behaviour. It was inappropriate and foolish. I acted foolishly," he said.

"I will personally contact the two journalists involved and apologise to them personally."

One of the journalists had been known to him for 15 years, Mr Brogden said, adding that he meant the gesture in jest.

He denied asking the other woman if she "was available".

"I just want to make it clear I am not holding back any excuses ... I am the one who accepts more than anyone the unacceptable behaviour," he said.

The revelations have reportedly caused an uproar in the senior sections of the Liberal Party.

Mr Carr said Mr Brogden's remarks about his wife were a "cruel insult against all Asian women". "Helena did something Mr Brogden has never done," the former premier said.

"She made a serious career in business where she was appointed to the board of Leigh Mardon, a public company.

"My wife Helena has higher qualifications and a more substantial career than this featherweight of mediocrity will ever have."

He and Helena did not plan to accept Mr Brogden's apology, he said. "This is an attack on my wife. Helena is furious - and with justification."

Toughest test awaits disorderly Brogden

After Bob Carr's sudden resignation last month, John Brogden finally had the chance to prove his youth was not a political liability and boast his leadership experience against the new, low-profile Premier, Morris Iemma.

But Brogden's confessed indiscretions make his recent claim to be the "grand old man of NSW politics" seem hollow and premature. His leadership is now likely to be put to the test, as his party colleagues decide whether he can withstand the exposure of a night last month of alcohol-inspired antics.

Last night senior Liberal figures were still coming to terms with the news their leader had publicly confirmed rumours that had circulated for weeks.

One senior Liberal told the Herald he thought Brogden would resign, adding: "It will take tomorrow's papers to bear that out."

But other Liberals believe that Brogden has strong support in the party and will be able to retain the leadership.

One MP said: "There is not the mood for change in the party and I don't think there will be. There won't be a move for change on an issue like this. Nor does anybody have the support to achieve it."

Brogden issued a frank and unreserved apology in an attempt to clear the matter and deflect continuing rumour and speculation. But whether his leadership can survive will depend on the extent of the public backlash and his ability to maintain support in the party.

The most likely leadership contender is the deputy opposition leader, Barry O'Farrell, with Peter Debnam also a likely candidate for the top job in the event of a challenge or Brogden resigning.

He won the leadership ballot by just one vote against Kerry Chikarovski in 2002, but since then has increased his party room support.

The Liberals have remained firmly behind their leader since Iemma's accession, believing that Brogden is performing well and that a leadership challenge would sacrifice any capital gained by Carr's departure.

Even a lacklustre opinion poll last week, which had Iemma leading Brogden as preferred premier by 36 to 27 per cent, appeared to ignite little worry in the party room.

Indeed, Brogden appeared the following day with a rousing, campaign-style speech at a party fundraiser that suggested he was more concerned about confronting Iemma than a potential challenger.

For now, Brogden will be able to persist with his claim that his public profile measures up to the new Premier - but for reasons he would rather forget.

Yeah well I don't think everyone universally hated Brogden's comments... I'm guessing some people are happy about it even though they might not admit it. It's all about public relations.

The problem I think is:

The advances on the journos alienate women - women are a key constituency of the libs.

The comments about Helena alienate the migrant community (25% of NSW) and importantly they also alienate men. The marvels of a patriachal society mean that his attack on Helena becomes an attack on Carr, an underhanded attack at that. Furthermore unprovoked he has impugned a womans honour - something many men find hard to swallow.

Time will tell. I would predict a stint in the back benches as he has become a dangerous liability in the pursuit of the first decent chance at an election win.
