I agree Asq. Barry O'Farrell would definately be a better choice, however it does come down party numbers in the end. we also musn't forget Peter Debnam who may also push for the leadership...

There is a distinct lack leadership within the party and this will undoubtedly continue to cause problems as it has done over the past 10 or so years...

Man...

Broggers finally comes up with something original and controversial, and they're kicking him out.

Good riddance, dickhead.

I think it may have something to do with the Carr government monopolising the position that used to be taken up by the Liberals.

The NSW ALP is so far to the right that it pretty much leaves the NSW Liberals nowhere...

That is quite true..

Well maybe not. We don't know yet. the Libs can either continue with a damaged leader that has a chance against Morris Iemma or start ALL OVER AGAIN with a new leader.

I think the Libs will be thinking seriously about keeping brogs. Both options are unpopular.

1. Damaged leader

2. Start all over again.

Well he just resigned. Caucus will meet on Wednesday to vote for a new Leader...

Given Brogden's comments about 'honour' and 'serving the party', I doubt that he would withdraw his resignation as leader (in the short term, anyway).

The fact is too, that the leadership problem is known by many within the party. I was talking with Anthony Roberts the MP for Lane Cove, and he himself admitted that fact quite explicitly.

Yet what is alarming is not the fact that leadership material is far and few between, but rather the that it is known issue and not being acted upon. If one looks at the list of Liberal members in the Legislative Assembly, there would only be around 3 or 4 that would be easily recognised. The depth simply isnt there and continually the party persists in preselcting candidates that do not have the necessary qualities...there needs to more foresight in planning for the 2007 election..

That Young Libs leader will pay. In our liberal paradigms he should stay but, in a Liberal paradigm he should've kept his mouth shut.

ALSO, as trouble comes in threes, I wonder what the next Liberal racial slur will be - 1) Headscarfes 2) "Mail-order bride" 3)...Terrorist?

Lastly, I guarantee that there will be some family-oriented policy pouring from the government in the coming days. Whenever the Libs get into hot water, they always fall back on their families focus.

...if the NSW Libs had a a reasonable leader they really should easily beat the ALP in NSW. They have been in power for so long, the trains are in a mess and hospitals are in a mess.

Same goes for the Federal Parliament. The Liberal party and the Howard government should have been voted out ages ago...as they almost where in 1998. However John Howard is smart enough to avoid that.

I actually think that if Brogden had hung on until 2007 he would have been premier. I feel more sorry for his wife and child. I also hope he honestly doesnt believe what he said.

It's not the federal opposition, it's just that the quality of life in Australia has gone up quite a bit since Howard's been in, and people attribute that to the government (whether it's true or not). Also, being the side with the more racist policies about immigration etc helps the government..

Yes it could be said that Howard was overtly racist back then. But remember Howard got shut down for it, and has learned since then not to be so race specific towards asians (silence when Hanson was on her ranting horse an exception).
I think it depends what sort of thing they were saying, how harsh it sounded etc... I think most people in Australia support policies that you would find racist.

I think that in the context the attack was meant to be far more of a slur against Bob Carr.

There has always been an inference that with Bob Carr's awkward nature and lack of children that perhaps he is in the closet. I have heard it implied before that Helena is merely a pawn, used for political convenience by Bob Carr. In this way I think that Brogden was merely having a go at Carr, the way that politicians do.

The fact that he brought Helena into it is unjustified but to see this as some major racial slur is pushing it IMO. Brogden was revelling in the wake of Carr's resignation, got a bit boozy and acted like an idiot. Obviously he was not in a clear state of mind to act like that in front of so many journalists. In all honesty I feel a bit sorry for him, alcohol can make us all act like idiots yet it was Brogden's decision to enter politics and the public arena and in that context his behaviour is completely inexcusable.

A high profile person? I don't think many people liked him/would vote for him. Being a high profile person does not mean that you cannot say stupid things... In case you havent noticed.

oh i dunno... Didn't Bronwyn Bishop try to ban headscarfes in public schools, as i saw last night on ABC news or something?

And sure... you CAN say stupid things... but 9 times out of 10, it will come back to bite you in the ass. Therefore, you should generally keep your mouth shut. Or at least not drink if you are a cheap drunk like Brogden apparently is.
